L’origine des croix de chemin

Les croix de chemin viennent probablement du monde celte : Basse-Bretagne, Irlande, Écosse et pays de Galles. Les premières croix auraient été érigées pendant le haut Moyen Âge par les moines chrétiens originaires de ces contrées.

En 1534, Jacques Cartier élève les premières croix au Canada, pour affirmer la prise de possession du territoire au nom du roi de France. Plus tard, les explorateurs et les missionnaires font de même pour marquer leur passage dans de nouveaux lieux. Puis, cette coutume se transmet aux premiers colons, qui élèvent des croix lorsqu'ils ouvrent des routes ou prennent possession d’un lopin de terre.

The origin of way crosses

Way crosses probably come from the Celtic world: Lower Brittany, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The first crosses were erected during the early Middle Ages by Christian monks from these countries.

In 1534, Jacques Cartier raised the first crosses in Canada, to affirm the taking possession of the territory in the name of the king of France. Later, explorers and missionaries did the same to mark their passage in new places. Then, this custom was transmitted to the first settlers, who raised crosses when they opened roads or took possession of a piece of land.
