The trail starts just across the main highway bridge over the Tongariro River at the northern entrance to the hydro town of Turangi. A zig-zag track climbs up the hill to a bench seat which provides a restful spot to view the Tongariro River below and southwards towards the mountains of Tongariro National Park. The town of Turangi, nestled amongst the trees, spreads out along the riverside with the main highway bridge just below and bush-covered Mt Pihanga providing shelter from the southern mountains. The River Walk trail continues on past this lookout, following the Tongariro River providing a pleasant walk along a loop track, crossing the Major Jones Swingbridge and returning to the other side of the main highway bridge. There are more river and mountain views to be enjoyed as you walk along the trail.
