Vera Mary Brittain (29 December 1893 – 29 March 1970) was an English Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse, writer, feminist, and pacifist. Her best-selling 1933 memoir Testament of Youth recounted her experiences during the First World War and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism.
She was the mother of Liberal Democrat Shirley Williams.
A plaque marking Brittain's former home can be seen at 9 Sidmouth Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme. (next to Brampton Park)

Baroness Williams of Crosby visited Brampton Park in Newcastle Under Lyme on Thursday 23rd July.
In 2000 she planted a copper beech on the Park in memory of her mother, Vera Brittain – who wrote ‘Testament of Youth’. She saw the tree and also the Lady in the Park sculpture which was inspired by the famous book. Photographs can be seen at the following link: (visit link)
