"A part of the church is the Prinsenkapel, which is the mausoleum of the early ancestors of the Dutch royal family, the Nassau-Dillenburg family.
The church is in the center of Breda on the Grote Markt. It is a cross basilica in the style of Brabant Gothic, which has been restored several times over time.
The church is the landmark of Breda. The tower of the church, with its 97 meters high already visible from far, can be climbed on some days. Upstairs there is a view of the Grote Markt and the city. De kerk is hét herkenningspunt van Breda. De toren van de kerk, met zijn 97 meter hoog al van ver zichtbaar, is op sommige dagen te beklimmen. Boven is er een uitzicht over de Grote Markt en de stad. Het kerkgebouw is gratis te bezichtigen en wordt tegenwoordig voornamelijk gebruikt voor concerten, cursussen, symposia, beurzen, modeshows, schoolexcursies, tentoonstellingen en als restaurant.
Het wordt voor het eerst genoemd als een stenen kerk in Breda in 1269. Het koor werd gebouwd in 1410. Ondanks de ineenstorting van de toren in 1457, werd de bouw van de kerk voltooid in 1468.
De kerk is sinds 1637 protestants. Er wordt tegenwoordig nog tien maal per jaar een kerkdienst gehouden. Ook vinden er regelmatig doopsels, huwelijksvieringen, herdenkingsdiensten en uitvaarten plaats.
Zowel door haar bouw als door haar ligging wordt de kerk tot de mooiste van Nederland gerekend. Als voorbeeld van de Brabantse gotiek is zij in Nederland het meest gave en elegante, hoewel minder bekend dan de Sint-Janskathedraal in 's-Hertogenbosch. De kerk staat in de 'Top 100 van de Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg' uit 1990. "
