In 1877, General William T. Sherman set up camp on the shores of beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene. Camp Coeur d’Alene, as they called it, was established with three primary missions. Keep the peace in northern Idaho, to keep a watchful eye on the Canadian border, and to protect railroad and telegraph crews that were establishing lines through the region.

According to historical documents Fort Sherman was officially established by the U.S. Congress on April 16, 1878, was in operation through 1898 and played a major role in the development of the city of Coeur d’Alene.
Trouble with the Canadians never arose, and Fort Sherman was abandoned in 1900. The original chapel, which faced the old parade grounds still serves as a church. Located on the North Idaho College campus one of the officers quarters has been refurbished and is now the offices for many of the faculty. The Ammunition Bunker serves as a historical museum.

The Fort Sherman Museum is staffed May 1st to September 30th and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The coordinates will place you near the refurbished fort entry gate just in front or the Fort Sherman Museum.
