Frederick William IV of Prussia, also called "The Romantic on the Throne" became king of Prussia in 1840. He died of a stroke in 1861, leaving the throne to his brother, Wilhem I who in 1871 became the first Kaiser of the German Empire.

Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria got married to the (then) crown prince in 1823. The couple had no children and when Elisabeth Ludovika died in 1873, she and her husband were put to rest together under the Church of Peace in Potsdam, a church that was build under the king's supervision in 1848.

The royal couple rests in marble coffins, guarded by a marble angel. The crypt below the church is behind closed doors. (above left).

There is only a small hole in the door (above right) to peek through the door.

A large statue of the king (left) in full glory is standing in front of the nearby Orangery Castle.

A small statue of his widow (right), walking the church garden in mourning is located behind the church.
