Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 suffered the greatest loss of any other firehouse in the city on September 11, 2001; as fifteen of their members died that day.
A memorial consisting of a bronze relief sculpture created by A. Kotler in 2002 and a bronze plaque is dedicated to the firefighters from Battalion 9 who lost their lives during the attack on the World Trade center on September 11, 2001. The bronze relief is 28" wide by 22" high and depicts, in the foreground, the firefighters coming to the aid of a fallen firefighter. Th the background firefighters are rising a flag amid the rubble of the World Trade Center Towers.
A 5" high by 7" wide bronze plaque beneath the relief is inscribed:
