In the military his last name was spelled Pittinger on his MOH citation. His burial name was spelled Pittenger. He was born on January 31, 1840 in Knoxville, OH and died on April 24, 1904 in Fallbrook, CA. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: PITTINGER, WILLIAM

• 5th to receive Medal of Honor
Citation: One of the 19 of 22 men (including 2 civilians) who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and tract between Chattanooga and Atlanta.
