The "March Against Fear" started in Memphis Tennessee in early June and ended 3 weeks later on 26 June 1966 with a rally at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson. This historic marker, placed by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History as part of the Mississippi Freedom Trail historical marker series.

The marker is located on the north side of the State Capitol building on High Street in downtown Jackson. If you visit, be careful parking because the street parking spots are reserved for members of the Mississippi state legislature.

The marker reads as follows:

"CAPITOL RALLY

On June 26, 1966, James Meredith's "March Against Fear" -- led by Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King, Junior, Floyd McKissick, and others after Meredith was shot and wounded -- ended its 3 week trek from Memphis with a rally at the State Capitol. The crowd was estimated at 15,000, the largest civil rights demonstration in Mississippi history. Stirring speeches were delivered by King, Carmichael, McKissick, the wounded Meredith, and others. The March Against Fear -- that brought together all the major civil rights figures and organizations and introduced into the movement the new urgency and energy of Black Power -- ended that afternoon on the high point of black pride and solidarity."
