"In 1856, the hotel took the names of its owners, William and Marianne Claridge, and can be seen today in the lobby of the hotel.
In 1812, a hotel called Mivart's Hotel opened at 51 Brook Street1 and established a clientele among members of the Diplomatic Corps. The hotel was sold in 1854 to William and Marianne Claridge, who already owned another hotel on the same street, Coulson's, which soon brought the buildings together and renamed them to their name.
In 1860, the Empress Eugenie (1826-1920), wife of Napoleon III, established his winter apartments at the Claridge and received the visit of Queen Victoria. This visit celebrates the reputation of the place. In the 1880s, the hotel is considered by many to be an extension of Buckingham Palace.
In 1894, the hotel was bought by the owner of Savoy, another legendary hotel in London, and was completely rebuilt. The new Claridge opened in 1898. It is now the Grade II listed building.
In 1909-1910, a ballroom was added to the original construction, designed by French architect René Sergent.
After the First World War, many aristocrats gave up maintaining their homes in London, which had become too expensive. Rent a suite at Claridge for the season is much cheaper.

"En 1856, l’hôtel prend le nom de ses propriétaires de l’époque, William et Marianne Claridge. On peut aujourd’hui voir le portrait de cette dernière dans le hall de l’hôtel.
En 1812, un hôtel du nom de Mivart's Hotel ouvre ses portes au 51, Brook Street1 et se constitue une clientèle parmi les membres du Corps diplomatique. L’hôtel est vendu en 1854 à William et Marianne Claridge, déjà propriétaires d’un autre hôtel situé au 49 de la même rue, le Coulson's, qui ne tardent pas à réunir les bâtiments et à rebaptiser l’ensemble à leur nom.
En 1860, l’impératrice Eugénie (1826-1920), épouse de Napoléon III, établit ses appartements d’hiver au Claridge et y reçoit la visite de la reine Victoria3. Cette visite consacre la réputation du lieu. Dans les années 1880, l’hôtel est d'ailleurs considéré par beaucoup comme une extension de Buckingham Palace.
En 1894, l’hôtel est racheté par le propriétaire du Savoy, autre hôtel mythique de Londres, et est entièrement reconstruit. Le nouveau Claridge ouvre ses portes en 1898. C’est ce bâtiment qui est aujourd’hui classé de grade II.
En 1909-1910, une salle de bal est ajoutée à la construction initiale, conçue par l’architecte français René Sergent.
Après la Première Guerre mondiale, bon nombre d’aristocrates renoncent à entretenir leurs demeures londoniennes, devenues trop coûteuses. Louer une suite au Claridge pour la saison revient bien moins cher.
