"A ceremony to dedicate the sculpture will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Third Street and Central Avenue.

The piece, entitled “Next Stop: Children’s Museum,” was painted by artist Lee Evans, who enlisted the help of local children to paint certain elements of the design. According to a news release, Evans is an avid supporter of the Temple Children’s Museum, a travelling exhibit that plans to open a permanent location at 214 S. Second St.

Dan Kelleher, the city’s Main Street program manager, said the trains are intended to make perusing downtown Temple more appealing to pedestrians.

“The Temple community supports the inclusion of public art along downtown pedestrian walkways and the Temple Art Train Project is making a significant contribution of such downtown public art,” Kelleher said.

A year ago, the city was awarded a $4,000 Anice Read Grant from the Texas Downtown Association to help fund the project. The grant was created in 1999 in honor of Read, who founded the Texas Downtown Association.

“A project like this that they’re doing in Temple is really going to catch a lot of people’s eyes and it shows there’s a commitment to art,” said Catherine Sak, executive director of the organization.

According to Nancy Glover, manager of the Temple Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city aims to eventually have 10 of the sculptures throughout downtown. The first three sculptures, two on Main Street and one on Avenue, were installed periodically since November.

“Our hope is it will create an atmosphere that makes downtown a destination where people hang out, go to the restaurants, do some shopping and really make a day of it.” Glover said."
