A room in the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum contains a life-like wax figure of Juan Ponce de León dressed as a 16th century attire of a Spanish explorer. A sign on the wall gives biographical details of the life of Juan Ponce de León. The sign is inscribed:

"Here rest the bones of a LION, mightier in
deeds than in name."


• On April 3, 1513 Spanish Conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon landed
  on what he believed to be an island, he named it La Florida

• The myth has grown that Ponce de Leon was searching for the
  Fountain of Youth to aid the ageing Spanish King, who had just
  married a woman 35 years younger than himself

• Before claiming Florida for Spain, Ponce de Leon also fought the
  Moors, sailed with Columbus and was the first Governor of   Puerto Rico

Born circa 1474 in Santervas de Campos, Spain
Died July 1521 in Havana, Cuba
Portrayed from the early 1500s

Juan Ponce de Leon was the 1st, 3rd and 7th Governor of Puerto Rico. He is interred in the Cathedral of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
