The construction of the Roman Bath was commissioned by the (then) heir to the Prussian throne, crown prince Frederick William IV after the completion of Charlottenhof Palace.

Construction started in 1829 under the supervision of Prussia's most famous architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and his student Ludwig Persius under participation of the crown prince. The entire complex, consisting of a Roman style villa, a tea pavilion and several pergolas, arcades and garden spaces was completed in 1840.
