Ixchel is referred to as the Mayan moon goddess because of the Moon's association with fertility and procreation. She carries a jug, which she continually empties onto the earth as the rains pour and the crops grow. She also wears a snake in her hair, a symbol of wisdom and medicine. Because of her understanding illness and care-taking, she is the village medicine woman.
Ixchel is depicted as represented in the Dresden Codex (
visit link) , the oldest surviving is a Mayan book. She stands on top of a 6' high pyramid of fieldstones with her jug upside down. She is wearing traditional Mayan dress and has a coiled snake on her head.
