The Textile Machine Works was founded by Henry Janssen and Ferdinand Thun in Wyomissing, PA, in 1892. These two men arrived in the New York City from Germany and separately worked in various textile industries before the two old acquaintances met up again and decided to open their own textile business in Wyomissing. They began by manufacturing coverings for wire and cable under the name Narrow Fabric Company and as the demand for full fashion hosiery grew, they converted their business, renamed the Berkshire Knitting Mills, to become the hosiery capital that Wyomissing became years later. The factory closed in 1982 as artificial fibers replaced natural silk and cotton and the demand for their products diminished.
Then in 2002, the empty building was purchased and converted to the very popular "The Works" which is an indoor entertainment facility. "We have 2 restaurants, a high-speed go kart track “Slick Willy’s”, a multi-million dollar arcade, laser tag, a huge indoor “Ballocity” play structure for kids." (
