Built on a former scrap metal yard, the Sandman Hotel is one of several large commercial buildings tied into the re-development of the former brownfield.
Construction of the hotel began around March 2015 and did not finish until June 2018 - over 3 years! To the passerby the construction appeared at times to be moving quickly, and at other times it would seem to show no progress over months. It is unclear exactly why the construction of the building took so long.

Hamilton is the first municipality in the province to issue a building permit for a six-storey wood-frame structure under a revised building code.
A 208-unit Sandman Hotel will be built at 560 Centennial Pkwy., at the South Service Road, close to a retail power centre.
Regulations that took effect Jan. 1 allow wood-frame residential and office buildings up to six storeys. Previously, the limit was four storeys.
According to plans submitted to the city, the hotel will include an indoor pool, and a Denny's and a Moxie's Classic Grill. Pre-construction on-site servicing work started on site Monday and excavation and foundation work will be starting March 23.
