Main Belt asteroid 5628 Preussen was discovered on September 13, 1991 by German astronomer Freimut Börngen and named after the Kingdom of Prussia (Preussen in German), one of the states that in 1871 formed Germany.

It was challenging to find a location for a state that does not exist anymore. We picked Sanssouci Castle as the location for this waymark as it was the residence of Prussia's most famous king, Frederick the Great, who 's grave is in front of the castle.

The castle was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 but Frederick's personal influence in the design and decoration was so huge that this style of architecture was later called Frederician Rococo.
