Before the establishment of a post office on Grand Cayman in 1889, mail was sent to Jamaica and then delivered by ships to the Cayman islands. Before 1939 the General Post Office was located in the Court House. In 1939, the construction of a new General Post Office completed by Rayal Bodden at an estimated cost was £2,000. The building housed three government departments – Customs, Treasury Post Office and Government Saving Bank.

During the 1970s, the islands experienced a major boom and the General Post Office took over the entire space of the current building. A postal mail van service to the districts was introduced in 1975. Today there are 2,897 private letter boxes installed in the General post Office and 11,000 mail boxes throughout the Cayman Islands.

The stamp was issued on May 6, 1980 as part of a set of six stamps commemorating the London '80 International Stamp Exhibition.
