The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics is a privately funded research institute, focusing on cosmic magnetic fields on various scales and extra-galactic astrophysics. It was founded in 1992 as a merger of the former Berlin Observatory (founded in 1700) and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam (founded in 1874).

Babelsberg Observatory

The institute owns and operates the Einstein Tower Solar Observatory and the Great Refractor in Potsdam's Einstein Park. It's headquarters are in the former Babelsberg Observatory.
