Anthem Brewing
from the Tulsa World May 2014
Matt Anthony started brewing with a Mr. Brew kit he received for a Christmas present. That small gift stirred something in Anthony.
He now crafts his beers at the Anthem Brewing Company, a 15,000-square-foot facility located at 908 SW Fourth St. in Oklahoma City. Seems like his hobby has since sort of gotten out of hand ... or maybe not.
From his first homebrewing and tasting craft beers, he was hooked and knew it was going to be his profession. In 2007, he started researching what it takes to become a brewmaster and starting his own company. His research involved traveling to Europe to visit as many breweries as possible so he could find out what worked for him and what did not.
In 2009, he wrote a business plan, and in early 2012, he met his investor and business partner and launched Anthem Brewing Company.
The start of the company was at a COOP brewery that was shared with Redbud, Black Mesa and Mustang. That ?ended when a tornado last May damaged the brewhouse beyond repair. Anthony decided to move on to a different location and to go it on his own. ?He purchased a brew system from a brewpub in Chicago, and his own brewery was launched.
A couple of weeks after the tornado struck, construction began at the new location, which was producing beer by the next January.
Anthony is strongly influenced by the Belgian style of beer making. Anthem produces a Trappist-style beer as well as a Belgian-style sour and numerous barrel-aged beers. All beers are fermented in open-top fermenters, and he pitches in the yeast.
“I really like the old-world style of fermenting with open-top fermenters. We think our yeast really likes it, too,” Anthony said. After the open-top fermentation, the beer is? then conditioned and packaged.
More beers will be on the market soon, but ?Golden One, a Belgian Blonde with 7% ABV, is available in kegs. When the canning line gets installed and is up and running, Anthem will be offering Arjuna, a Belgian-style Wit, and a Uroboros Stout, which will be shipped in cans and kegs.
By late summer or early fall, three more year-round beers will be offered in cans. Special-release beers are planned to come out once a month. The company has a lot of beer being barrel-aged now that will be a part of the special offerings. They will be aging beers in barrels anywhere from three months to three years.
