"Sieben Schichten Farbe hat meine Tante Ina abgebeizt, bevor das Holz zum Vorschein kam" sagt Gertrudis Symann, Apothekerin in der Schwanen-Apotheke in Bad Münstereifel. Ihre Apothekeneinrichtung aus dem Jahr 1806 ist nach soviel liebevoller Pflege heute in bestem Zustand.
Nach Jahren der Unsicherheit, was aus dem Schmuckstück werden würde, hatte die Apothekerin diese Woche eine gute Nachricht für die Redaktion der Pharmazeutischen Zeitung: Die Schwanen-Apotheke samt Einrichtung bleibt erhalten. Sie ist seit dem 7. Juni 1997 ein Apothekenmuseum und zugleich das erste in Nordrhein-Westfalen, das auch in der Architektur mit den historischen Tatsachen übereinstimmt.
Wer nämlich das frischgebackene Museum in der Werther Straße besichtigt, gehört zu den ungezählten Besuchern, die seit 1806 über die Schwelle des Hauses getreten sind. Heute als Liebhaber schöner Gegenstände, alter Möbel, und pharmazeutischer Gerätschaften, vor 191 Jahren als Kunde von Theodor Bresgen, dem Gründer der Schwanen-Apotheke. Napoleon regiert zu dieser Zeit Westfalen und damit auch Münstereifel, es sind noch sechs Jahre bis zum Rußlandfeldzug. Auf dem Rückzug soll Napoleon im Apothekengebäude übernachtet haben.
Theodors Sohn Franz-Josef übernimmt die Schwanen-Apotheke 1834; Deutschland steht mit der Gründung des Zollvereins im selben Jahr als noch junge Wirtschaftsmacht am Beginn des Industriezeitalters. Ein Jahr später fährt die erste Eisenbahn zwischen Nürnberg und Fürth, Märzrevolution und Reichsgründung stehen noch bevor. Zu dieser Zeit denkt man in Münstereifel vor allem über die Erhaltung der Stadtmauer nach. Sie ist heute noch intakt, weshalb das Schienennetz vor dem Stadttor in einem Sackbahnhof endet.
1864 übernimmt Carl-Theodor Bresgen die Schwanen-Apotheke. Unter seiner Führung überlebt sie drei Kriege (Preußen gegen Dänemark, Österreich und Frankreich), die gesamte Regierungszeit Otto von Bismarcks und Kaiser Wilhelm I. Kaiser Wilhelm II. Ist noch an der Macht, als 1906 Laurenz Bresgen Schwanen-Apotheker in Bad Münstereifel wird. Er bringt das Familienunternehmen durch die letzten Jahre des Wilhelminischen Zeitalters, durch die Weimarer Republik, den Nationalsozialismus und zwei Weltkriege, bis Tochter Ina 1948 seine Nachfolge antritt.
Trotz Wiederaufbau und Wirtschaftswunder verzichtet Ina Bresgen auf die Modernisierung der Offizin. Sie erkennt den Wert der kunstvoll gestalteten Rokkokodecke und des soliden Eichenholzmobiliars. Schließlich läßt sie alle Farbschichten, die unter vier Apothekergenerationen auf das kostbare Holz aufgetragen wurden, entfernen und bringt so das Innere in den heutigen Zustand.
1974 übernehmen Gertrudis und Theodor Symann die Schwanen-Apotheke. Bis 1994 bleiben sie in den alten Räumen und verzichten bis zuletzt auf überladene Regale und einen vollgestellten Handverkaufstisch. Im Dienst des guten Geschmacks holen die Symanns und ihre Mitarbeiterinnen das Gewünschte aus dem ersten Stock herab. Nur so können die schönen, aber heute unzweckmäßigen Standgefäße stilvolle Ergänzung der historischen Einrichtung bleiben. "Das war immer viel Gerenne und oft auch unpraktisch, aber wir haben es gerne gemacht", erinnert sich die Apothekerin.
Auch lehnt die Familie den Einbau feuerhemmender Sicherheitstüren ab, deren zu kurz gekommener Optik viel honigfarbenes Eichenholz bätte weichen müssen. "Die Behörden haben immer ein Auge zugedrückt, weil wir Teil der Stadtgeschichte sind und die Apotheke schon so lange im Familienbesitz ist. Bei Besitzerwechsel wäre sie sicher geschlossen worden" Und dann? Eine Eisdiele, eine Boutique, ein Schuhgeschäft? Die schöne Einrichtung wäre einem fremden Zweck zugeführt worden.
Trotzdem wird 1994 aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen der Apothekenbetrieb in neue Räume verlegt. "Hier in der Fußgängerzone gibt es keine Parkplätze, da kommen viele Kunden gar nicht erst her", sagt Gertrudis Symann, "und als dann vor dem Stadttor in verkehrsgünstiger Lage eine Apotheke aufmachte, sahen wir keinen Ausweg mehr."
Im Januar 1996 kauft der Förderverein für Denkmalpflege das 400 Jahre alte Gebäude mit der Apothekeneinrichtung von 1806. Die Nordrheinwestfalenstiftung ermöglicht Kauf und Renovierung des Hauses. 420 Standgefäße aus Familienbesitz und Dauerleihgaben des Deutschen Apotheken-Museums Heidelberg gehören nun zur Einrichtung. Spenden - auch aus jüngerer Zeit - werden gerne genommen."

After years of uncertainty about what would become of the gem, the pharmacist had good news for the editorial staff of the Pharmazeutische Zeitung this week: The Schwanen pharmacy and its furnishings will be preserved. Anyone who visits the new museum in Werther Straße is one of the countless visitors who have crossed the threshold of the building since 1806. Today as a lover of beautiful objects, old furniture and pharmaceutical equipment, 191 years ago as a customer of Theodor Bresgen, the founder of the Swan Pharmacy. At this time Napoleon ruled Westphalia and thus also Münstereifel, there are still six years until the Russian campaign. During the retreat Napoleon is said to have stayed overnight in the pharmacy building.
Theodor's son Franz-Josef takes over the Schwanen-Apotheke in 1834; with the founding of the Zollverein in the same year, Germany stands at the beginning of the industrial age as a young economic power. A year later, the first railway runs between Nuremberg and Fürth, and the March Revolution and the foundation of the Reich are still to come. At this time, people in Münstereifel were thinking above all about the preservation of the city wall. It is still intact today, which is why the rail network in front of the city gate ends in a sack station.
1864 Carl-Theodor Bresgen takes over the Schwanen pharmacy. Under his leadership it survives three wars (Prussia against Denmark, Austria and France), the entire reign of Otto von Bismarck and Emperor Wilhelm I. Emperor Wilhelm II is still in power when Laurenz Bresgen becomes a swan pharmacist in Bad Münstereifel in 1906. He took the family business through the last years of the Wilhelminian era, the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and two world wars, until his daughter Ina succeeded him in 1948.
Despite reconstruction and the economic miracle, Ina Bresgen decided not to modernize the office. She recognises the value of the artistically designed rococo ceiling and the solid oak furniture. Finally, she had all the layers of paint applied to the precious wood by four generations of pharmacists removed and thus restored the interior to its present state.
In 1974 Gertrudis and Theodor Symann took over the Schwanen pharmacy. Until 1994 they stay in the old rooms and do without overloaded shelves and a full hand sales table. In the service of good taste, the Symanns and their employees fetch what they want from the first floor. Only in this way can the beautiful but now inexpedient stand vessels remain a stylish addition to the historical furnishings. "That was always a lot of running around and often also impractical, but we were happy to do it," the pharmacist remembers.
The family also rejects the installation of fire-retardant security doors, the appearance of which has been neglected and a lot of honey-coloured oak has to give way. "The authorities have always turned a blind eye because we are part of the city's history and the pharmacy has been in the family for so long. If there had been a change of ownership, it would certainly have been closed" And then what? An ice cream parlour, a boutique, a shoe shop? The beautiful interior would have been used for a different purpose.
Nevertheless, in 1994 the pharmacy business was moved to new premises for economic reasons. "There are no parking spaces here in the pedestrian zone, many customers don't even come here," says Gertrudis Symann, "and when a pharmacy opened in front of the city gate in a convenient location, we saw no way out."
In January 1996, the Förderverein für Denkmalpflege bought the 400-year-old building with the pharmacy furnishings from 1806. The North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation made it possible to purchase and renovate the building. 420 stand vessels from family property and permanent loans from the German Pharmacy Museum in Heidelberg are now part of the furnishings. Donations - even from more recent times - are gladly accepted."
