Long Description:
This route starts at the recreation area of Los Arenales, a space dedicated to leisure
which can be reached through the GC-132 road. The first stretch of the way consists of
a short walk through a road for residential use that ends next to a signpost indicating
the start of the dirt track by the riverbed of the ravine.
There are two elements that stand out in this rocky area whose prominence is contested
by willow trees and wild olive trees: the first one is an old well fallen into disuse which
marks the end of the dirt track on the left bank; and the second one is a ditch that will
guide hikers in the ascent through this protected natural area.
The ditch, made of stone and mortar, is located in the area known as La Colomba and
it is part of a hydraulic construction that includes a gallery and a cantonera (a Canarian
irrigation system) that are essential in the water distribution process to the Valle de los
Nueve. Keep walking forward following the creek and the signposts and preserving
the signs and the environment in order to avoid getting lost. This first 1-kilometre
stretch is an easy walk until the first waterfall located in La Solana.
Continue walking next to the watercourse and enter the area known as Castillo, the
old name of this ravine, owned by the County of La Vega Grande. The greenery reveals
itself in all its splendour and offers a wonderful view of cork trees, Canarian willow
trees, tajinastes and scented white brooms. The trees increase in height and you will be
able to notice trunks of fallen trees scattered around or positioned as natural bridges
to facilitate the crossing of water streams.
As the pathway continues through the dense depths of the ravine, close to the area
of the Cadenillas, the waterfalls emerge from the side of Los Cernívalos and become
impetuous torrents, but not strong enough to prevent hikers from taking a dip in the
pools that are formed in an increasingly leafy and dense environment full of large
rocks. Even though this is an easy route, you must be careful with the muddy and
slippery ground.
Later on, you will find a fork in the road during the steepest stretch of the trail that will
take you to the Barranquillo de Ñamerillas de los Tabucos. However, you must not take
this path. Leave that path behind on your left side, and continue the way up through
the sharpest slope towards Las Chorreras. Finally, a winding road will lead you through
a charming surprise consisting of several waterfalls. Before the fourth waterfall, you
will see a double cascade where the trail ends. Now it is the time to retrace your steps
and make your way back to the start of the route. The trail through the ravine still
continues a bit forward until the area known as El Cañón; however, that stretch of the
trail of Los Cernícalos is steeper and has not been adapted properly to be faced in
complete safety, and therefore it can be dangerous and it is only recommended for
highly experienced hikers.
