Das ehemalige Kloster Heisterbach liegt im Siebengebirge zwischen Oberdollendorf und Heisterbacherrott. Es wurde 1189 von 12 Zisterzienser-Mönchen gegründet, die aus der Abtei Himmerod in der Eifel entsandt worden sind. Ab 1202 wurden die ersten Gebäude der Klosteranlage gebaut, 1237 wurde die imposante Abteikirche geweiht. Sie war damals die zweitgrößte Kirche nach dem Kölner Dom. 1803 wurde die Abtei mit der Säkularisation aufgehoben und die Anlage ging in den Besitz der bergischen Landesregierung über.

Inzwischen ist von der ehemals prunkvollen Abteikirche nur noch die Chorruine übrig. Zu den erhaltenen Gebäuden des Klosters zählen das Pfortenhaus, das Brauhaus sowie eine Scheune. Diese werden z.T. für Ausstellungen zur Geschichte des Klosters genutzt, später hinzugekommene Neubauten werden dagegen von einem Altenheim genutzt.

Im Rahmen des vom Land geförderten Projekts "Regionale 2010" wurde das Klostergelände zu einem Besucherzentrum ausgebaut und ist heute ein beliebtes Ziel für Wanderer im Siebengebirge.
The former monastery Heisterbach is located in the Siebengebirge between Oberdollendorf and Heisterbacherrott. It was founded in 1189 by 12 Cistercian monks who were sent from Himmerod Abbey in the Eifel. From 1202, the first buildings of the monastery were built, in 1237 the imposing abbey church was consecrated. It was then the second largest church after Cologne Cathedral. In 1803 secularization lead to the abolishment of the monastery and the grounds became the property of the provincial government.

In the meantime, only the choir ruin remains of the formerly magnificent abbey church. The preserved monastic buildings include the gatehouse, the brewery as well as a barn. These are partly used for exhibitions on the history of the monastery, later added new buildings, however, are used by a retirement home.

As part of the country-sponsored project "Regionale 2010", the site has been converted into a visitor center and is now a popular destination for hikers in the Siebengebirge.
