Auch wenn erwiesenermaßen schon seit mindestens 14.000 Jahren Menschen in der Umgenung der heutigen Stadt Bonn lebten, stammt die erste dokumentierte, befestigte Siedlung aus dem Jahre 12 v. Chr. Es handlete sich um ein Römerlager mit dem Namen "Bonna" direkt am Rhein. Man kann sagen, dass daraus die heutige Stadt Bonn hervorging. Die vollständigen Stadtrechte erlangte Bonn allerdings erst viel später im Jahre 1243.

Im Jahr 1989 veranstaltete die Stadt eine 2000-Jahrfeier bezugnehmend zu dem Römerlager von 12 v. Chr. Neben zahlreichen Veranstaltungen gehörte auch die Einweihung des sogeanannten Römerdenkmals zu den Feierlichkeiten. Es steht im rechtsrheinischen Bonn-Beuel an einem vielgenutzten Fuß- und Radweg in Rheinnähe und zeigt lebensgroß den damaligen römischen Feldherren Gajus Julius Cäsar. Er ist sitzend auf einem Thron abgebildet, in seiner Hand hält er die Konstruktionspläne für die erste Rheinbrücke, die in der Nähe Bonns bei Neuwied bauen ließ. Die Statue ist auf einem etwa drei Meter hohen Sockel positioniert, in den "2000 Jahre Bonn" eingraviert ist. Auf der Rückseite des Throns ist "C. Iul. Caesar flumenti pontem primus imposuit a. a. Chr. n. LV." eingraviert - übersetzt: "G. Jul. Caesar hat über den Fluss eine Brücke als Erster errichtet im Jahr vor Chr. Geb. 55".
Although it has been proven that people have been living in the surrounding area of today's city of Bonn for at least 14,000 years, the first documented, fortified settlement dates back to 12 BC. It was a Roman camp with the name "Bonna" directly on the river Rhine. It can be said that the present city of Bonn emerged from it. The full city rights, however, did not obtain Bonn until much later in 1243.

In 1989, the city held a 2000-year celebration referring to the Roman camp of 12 BC. In addition to numerous events, the inauguration of the so-called Römerdenkmal (i.e. Roman monument) was part of the celebrations. It is located in Bonn-Beuel on the right bank of the Rhine on a much-used foot and bike path in the vicinity of the Rhine and shows the life-size statue of the then Roman commander Gajus Julius Caesar. He is seated on a throne, holding in his hand plans for the construction of the first bridge over the Rhine near Bonn at Neuwied. The statue is positioned on a pillar about three meters high, engraved in which is "2000 years Bonn". On the back of the throne "C. Iul. Caesar flumenti pontem primus imposuit a. a. Chr. n. LV." is engraved - translating to: "G. Jul. Caesar has built a bridge over the river as the first in the year 55 before Christ birth".
