description/mission statement:
This group is dedicated to creating and logging waymarks for Southern African Trig Beacons. This important and interesting piece of history is rapidly being forgotten in our modern "GPS" age, and we want to do what we can to preserve it. The scope of this group covers formal trig beacons of the style used for former British colonies, and applies to South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. There are 27,058 trig beacons in South Africa alone, and an unknown number in other Southern African countries. We believe that most of these beacons were built by Italian ex-prisoners of war shortly after the Second World War. Oh, did we say that it's great fun finding these old beacons, and that many of them are in the most amazing places with stunning views?? LATEST NEWS: Our "Southern Africa Trig Beacons" Waymarking CATEGORY has been approved and is ready for you to list your local trig beacons!! Hooray!! South African Trig Beacons waymarks can be found here (visit link)
