Description:: You see them everywhere - on the sides of buildings, at waysides, bolted to rocks - signs that commemorate the history of an area. WARNING: There are already many historic marker categories restricted to geographic areas, particular subjects, or official lists. If the marker you are trying to waymark fits in one of the existing categories, it is NOT allowed here. This category was conceived to fill the gaps these other categories miss. Click on "show additional information" before posting.

Expanded Description:

Find a sign that commemorates the history of an area. This needs to be a permanent sign that was placed by a government organization, church, university or social organization.

We are looking for signs with approximately 50 words that commemorate a bit of local history that occurred at or near the sign that teach the reader about it that cannot be waymarked in another existing historical marker category.

We are not looking for:
o Signs that are commercial in nature
o Signs that simply say "George Washington slept here 1785."
o Signs whose primary purpose is to state that a structure was placed on a National or State Register of Historic places without giving a significant description of the history behind the building
o Signs that give technical details of a structure (height, length, cost, materials used, construction duration) without also providing history
o Signs that teach about science or nature without giving the specific history of the subject

The following is a list of the other historical marker categories on waymarking.com and what historical markers they allow or don't allow as far as we are able to determine (this is currently a work in progress):

United States	Restrictions
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming	Allow any credible historical marker
Alabama	Allows only those on the list
California	Allows only those on the list
Connecticut	Allows only those primarily placed by the historical commission.
Delaware	Allows only those on the list
Georgia	Plaques located on the Chickamauga National Battlefield (normally blue or red) in NW Georgia detailing the Battle of Chickamauga should be placed in the “Signs of History” category.
Hawaii	Allows only those on the list (No list present)
Indiana	Allows only those on the list
Maryland	Allows only those on the list
Nevada	Allows only those on the list
Montana	Allows only outdoor roadside markers (older or newer styles)
New Hampshire	Allows only those on the list
New Jersey	Allows only markers from the New Jersey Historic Trust and New Jersey DOT (no online list - Waymarking.com is helping to create this list)
New York	Only official New York State Markers. Visit here for a detailed explanation.
North Carolina	Allows only those on the list
Ohio	Allows only those on the list
Pennsylvania	Allows only those on the list
Texas	Allows only those on the list
Tennessee	Allows only those on the list (You must search The Courier newsletter to find the markers)
Virginia (clarification)	From the expanded description, "The waymark must be an official Virginia Historic Marker, erected by the authority of the state, a municipality, college, or similar authority. It should be along a highway, in a highway rest area, or some other similar setting." However, the group interprets this only as an official metal sign on a pole (usually white, green or bronze). Other types of plaques, kiosks, etc. will not be accepted in Virginia Historic Markers.
West Virginia	Allows only those on the list
Wisconsin	Allows only those on the list

Canada	Restrictions
Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan	Allow any credible historical marker
British Columbia	Allows only British Columbia Heritage markers.
Ontario	Allows only those on the list
Quebec	Allows only those on the list , list or list

International	Restrictions
Australian, France, Portugal, Norway, United Kingdom	Allow any credible historical marker

Instructions for Posting a Signs of History Waymark:

Please include the following in your waymark: - Naming convention: Please use the following naming convention: Title of sign - City, State/Province/Country. For example: The Steam Engine - Dallas, TX. If the sign does not have a clear title, then use a short (1-8 word) description of the main topic covered by the sign. If the sign is two-sided or otherwise has two titles, please include both in the waymark name separated by a / - Two quality pictures of the marker that you have personally taken: one a close-up (please make this your default photo) and one a distance shot showing the marker and its surroundings to assist visitors in finding it. Please do not include your GPSr or yourself in these two photos. Take and upload additional photos if you or your GPSr like to be on the web. Also, please photograph any existing structures or locations that are described on the sign (optional). - The text on the marker. - Coordinates obtained personally by you from your GPSr. If the sign is inside a building or other area where GPS signal is weak, then take the coordinates from a logical entrance and include a description of how to to get from the coordinates to the sign in your description. - Please try to find additional information about the event(s) on the sign and post this information or a web link to it.

NAMING: Please name your waymark: Name - City, State/Province/Country.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

Take a picture of the marker, preferably including yourself or your GPSr in the photo. A very detailed description of your visit may be substituted for a photo. In any case please provide a description of your visit. A description of only "Visited" or "Saw it while on vacation" by anyone other than the person creating the waymark may be deleted by the waymark owner or the category officers.
