Dated Buildings and Cornerstones

Managed By: Icon Here Stone Corners
Description:
Buildings on which the date of construction was incorporated in the fabric of the building by the builders and is clearly visible. Cornerstones are an example.
Expanded Description:

Putting the date of construction on a building is a statement of self-confidence and optimism. Self-confidence in that that creation of this building was a noteworthy event. Optimism that the building will still be around many years hence. One normally associates such confidence with large public projects like libraries or churches, but some surprisingly humble structures have made similar statements.

Often the date is present on a cornerstone, or ceremonial foundation stone, along with a record of the dignitaries present at "laying the first stone" ceremony. In other cases the date may be inscribed higher up, on an archway, gable or entablature of a collonade.

We are only looking for dates that were (as far as can be determined) put in place at the time of construction, and those that have been incorporated into the fabric of the building. Please, no plaques that have been added as an afterthought, or signs that have been put up in later years.

When creating your waymark you are strongly encouraged to research the background to the building. Who built it? Why was it built at that time? What was surrounding area like at the time of construction? Was this a construction boom? How have things changed?

Only one waymark per building please, even if several dates are on display.

Thanks to Occam, ggmorton and the Bean Team for use of photos above.

Instructions for Posting a Dated Buildings and Cornerstones Waymark:

Before Posting a Waymark

Before you post a new waymark please ensure that the building you are waymarking fulfils the following criteria:

A) The date of construction is clearly displayed in a way easily visible to the public. This will almost always be on the outside of the building, but exceptional cases (such as a large floor mosaic in a publicly accessible foyer) will exist and can be considered when they arise. Please, no stones hidden apologetically inside the building.

B) The date was worked into the fabric of the building at the time of construction. No plaques please, whether added at a later date, or put up for opening ceremonies.

Special notes:

* Orphan Cornerstones Sometimes an old cornerstone exists separate from a building, eg if the original building has been demolished. A waymark for such a cornerstone will be accepted if: It's publicly accessible; It's in the location of the original building; You can demonstrate (eg a photo of a plaque or a web link) that the cornerstone is original.

* Established Dates Sometimes a building shows a date "Established XXXX". This normally refers to the company who built the building, and does not necessarily refer to the date of construction of the building. Waymarks for such buildings will only be accepted if you can demonstrate (eg a photo of a plaque or a web link) that the building was constructed on this date.

When Posting a Waymark

When you post a waymark please make sure your waymark fulfils these criteria:

1) Detailed Picture Supply at least one detailed picture, taken by you, showing the date and any associated inscription.

2) Building Picture Supply a picture or pictures, taken by you, of the building as a whole. See also note on cross-listing below

3) Description In your description, please supply as much information as you can about the building. For example: Who built it? Why was it built when it was? How have things changed? Has it lasted well?

4) Naming. Please prefix the name of your waymark with the year of construction, eg "1899 - Central Library, Somewhere"

5) Only one waymark per building. If a building has several dates on display, (eg a cornerstone and a date above a collonade) then provide pictures of both.

Note: Cross Listing
Sometimes the dated building will have been waymarked in one of several other building categories. If this is the case please fill in the "Cross-Listed Waymark" variable, which will provide a quick link to the building in another category. Note that if you yourself posted the linked waymark, then there is no need to upload additional photos (requirement 2 above) - but not the detailed photo, We still require that!.

Note: What is a building?
Clarification added April 2013. What do we mean by a "building"? For the purpose of this category it should at least have a door, walls and one or more rooms inside. There is a separate category for dated bridge stones.
