Abstract Public Sculptures
Description:
Incredible abstract sculpture abounds for the public's viewing pleasure, IF they can find it. This category is dedicated to locating these sometime hidden treasures and waymarking them for all to see and enjoy. Please click on "show additional information" below to see requirements for posting in this category.
Expanded Description:

You are looking for public sculpture that is of abstract form, or an abstracted representation of a form (for example, a giant hand made of thin twisted wire). There are many definitions of Abstract art, but no definitive one. A few lines from Wikipedia states, "Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete. Abstraction exists along a continuum. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction." Wikipedia Abstract Art

The Figurative Public Sculpture category does allow for 100% representational pieces to slightly abstracted human, animal or fantasy creature forms. Abstract Public Sculptures allows for pieces that are beyond 'slightly abstracted.' Thus, there is a blurring of the lines between the categories. That is the nature of art.

The work must be located in an area that is open to the public and free of charge. A sculpture in an airport that is within the secure area (or any other secured location) would not fit this category as only people with tickets would be able to view the sculpture. The sculpture should be of a permanent nature; not a temporary exhibit that ends at a set time period. Consumer mass-market items commonly made of tin, plaster, plastic, concrete, etc., such as garden/patio sculptures are prohibited.

Instructions for Posting a Abstract Public Sculptures Waymark:

This category is looking for Abstract Public Art. The pieces must be free to the public and not on temporary exhibition. (The plaque for the piece or other signage usually will denote if the exhibit is temporary.)

Examples of Abstract Public Sculptures would be:

- WMA2KT Reaching - College Place, WA
- WM9EYB Roue oriflamme, Jean Arp - Ascona, TI, Switzerland
- WM98BM Lesson of a Disaster - University of Arizona - Tucson, AZ
- WM9BYF Meg's Pause - Glenhyrst Gardens, Brantford, Ontario

A slightly abstracted Figurative Public Sculpture example would be:

WM8Y62 Horse - Fountain Hills, AZ This type of piece should be submitted to Figurative Public Sculpture.

Instructions for Posting an Abstract Public Sculpture Waymark:

1. The piece must be free to the public and not temporary.

2. Must provide accurate coordinates using Waymarkings’ default of lat/long in decimal minute per the WGS84 datum (most GPSr's default datum) and have actually visited the Waymark.

3. Minimum of two photos that you have personally taken that show the piece as best as one can. Close-ups really add to the Waymark and often two photos are not enough. Abstract pieces are often very large and may need additional photos to really showcase the piece. An example of a huge piece would be WM8RNZ Trade Deficit - Denver, CO

You are strongly encouraged to upload as many photographs to really ‘show off’ the piece. If a plaque is available with the title, artist, date, etc., you must provide this photograph. Do not include your GPSr or yourself in the default photo. An appropriate time to include people is to show scale/size.

4. Naming requirement: Title of Piece (or unknown if not known) - City, State/Province/Country (whichever is appropriate). Example: Reaching - College Place, WA

5. In the "Long Description" field, include a brief description of the piece. Try to find out a bit of information about the piece and artist; anything that would help us better understand the piece. Please cite your sources. The bulk of the text in the long description must be left black. If the post is not in English, please provide an English translation.

6. Identify the material/media used to construct the piece as well any unique features about the piece, date of creation or installation (if known) and location if the piece is in a specific area. If you do not have this information, just enter 'unknown.'

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
