Frieze Art
Managed By: Icon Here Frieze Framers
Description:
This category's mission is to waymark buildings with Frieze Art in their architecture.
Expanded Description:

Look Up! The Frieze of a building is the area from above the door to the cornice. This can be indoors or outdoors.

The most common Frieze art is Bas-relief. Bas-relief is a shallow depth carving.

Other common styles of Frieze art include Murals, High-relief, and Art Deco brickwork and tile patterns.

The following website is useful is researching artwork. http://sirismm.si.edu/siris/ariquickstart.htm

*Clarification* While the doorway is technically part of the frieze, if the doorway is the only art, please submit into the Doorways of the World category instead. If the doorway ties into other frieze art of a buildings, please go ahead and submit it here.

Think of the architect as an artist, and the whole building as the palate. We want to see what the architect intended here. The facade of a building may contain numerous relief sculptures and other relief work that make up the 'whole picture' architecturally speaking (many prior waymark approvals of Relief Art Sculptures should have been submitted into the Frieze Art category, although the lines get blurred between the two categories). If there is any doubt about which category a piece of relief artwork falls into, please message a category officer BEFORE submitting a waymark.

If the Frieze Art contains a relief sculpture that is the ONLY artwork on the building, please submit it into the Relief Art Sculptures category (see examples here, here, and here).

Instructions for Posting a Frieze Art Waymark:
ONE waymark per building
One close-up of a piece of art as the default photo and a minimum of one photo of the entire face of the building (no GPSr please). The more photos the better!

Post coordinates near the entrance to the building.

Additional information about the history of the artwork to include artist, date built, original and current use of building is strongly advised. Failure to include a short description of the frieze work and/or the building will result in your waymark being denied.

Always include a web link to any source of information that went into the waymark, regardless of whether it is a direct quote or not.

Optional variables are only optional if they don't exist. If you have searched for information, and come up dry, please describe your fruitless search in the reviewer notes.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Logging requirements: Please upload your own personal photos of the building and a piece of art (minimum 1).
