Lychgates and Depositories
Managed By: Icon Here The Lych Mob
Description:
Originally Lychgates were a covered gateway used as the temporary resting place for a casket or corpse awaiting burial. They generally were located at a cemetery or church to provide protection from the elements. Depositories, though differing in appearance and placement, served essentially the same purpose.
Expanded Description:
As lychgates seem to have originated in the British Isles, the most appropriate place from which to derive a clear definition of them would be the Illustrated Dictionary of British Churches, which describes lychgates thus:
Lych Gate
A covered gate, usually at the entrance to a churchyard. The term lych evolved from the Saxon word for corpse, and the lych gate was traditionally a place where corpse bearers carried the body of a deceased person and laid it on a communal bier. The priest would then carry out the first part of a burial ceremony under the shelter of the lych gate roof. Lych gates are usually of wood, and thus subject to decay. For that reason many are fairly modern reconstructions of much older timber covered gateways. They are traditionally roofed with wooden or clay tiles, or thatch.

The large timber beams framing the gateway are often carved with decorative elements, or inscribed with the names of donors. There are frequently small bench seats on either side of the passage - very useful for sheltering from a rain shower! A number of churches erected, or re-erected, lych gates to mark the millennium in the year 2000.
From the Britain Express

Depositoire
The depository, or temporary vault, is a structure allowing the deposit of coffins while waiting for an interment or cremation.

The depositories can be of any form or material. Often with doors, easier to open, some town halls preferred to choose a vault with a tombstone or slab. In solid granite or simple prefabricated vaults, the aesthetics and practicality are not always studied.

It does not facilitate the deposit of [mementos] or flowers, nor [is it intended for] mourning. Indeed, the family knows that it is a temporary place, the deceased is not in his "last home", and [the family is aware that] it will handle the coffin again.
From Funeral Fathers
PIC The Lychgate to the right is at St Martin's, Canterbury, the oldest church in England still in regular use. While parts of the church itself likely predate 597 A.D., the lychgate is, by comparison, nearly contemporary, dating from 1892. Note the seats within. These ofttimes served a dual purpose. Caskets often were left in a lychgate for one or two days and required attendants to protect them from grave robbers. When the priest arrived to perform the ceremony, the initial part was often performed under the cover of the lychgate.

Today lychgates can be found in much of the world, especially in locales which were at one time under British rule and the influence of the Church of England. The lychgate, or at least the concept, also seems to have been adopted on a limited scale in Continental Europe, as examples have been found in several Continental countries.

The French Depositoire (English: Depository) doesn't translate meaningfully into other languages, so we will use the French here. Common translations are: vault, sepulcher, mausoleum or depository. The Depositoire, while it is roughly analogous to the Lychgate, is usually intended to hold hermetically sealed coffins for as long as 12 months while the deceased awaits final burial. There can be several reasons for its use: a mausoleum is not yet completed, the family has not yet made a decision on the final disposition of the deceased or a burial plot is not yet available. As such, the Depositoire is commonly constructed to accommodate a number of caskets at any given time. As opposed to the Lychgate, the Depositoire is seldom, if ever, placed at the entrance to the cemetery or churchyard, generally being found within, near the entrance. Though we are unfamiliar with local nomenclature, structures of similar style and purpose may be found in other countries, as well. In northern climates they have been used to temporarily store the bodies of those who have passed away in the winter, awaiting burial in the spring, when the ground has thawed.

As Depositoires very often bear a strong resemblance to mausoleums, we will require documentation of their identity, in the form of either wording on the structure, a linked quotation from the church or cemetery, or a link to a description of the Depositoire which describes it as a Depositoire. Also, be careful that your Depositoire is not actually an Ossuary (Ossuaire), as they are easily confused.

Below is an example of a large stone Depositoire, this one at Carmes cemetery in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Designed by architect François-Louis Jarier, it was built in 1877.

Age, construction material or presence or absence of seating are not major considerations here. Simply stated, this category will accept all and any lychgates, or lychgate-like structures, located at religious edifices or cemeteries, which are capable of serving as weather protection for a small group of people. That is, they must have a three dimensional aspect and a substantial roof, as opposed to a simple gate or archway.

The year of construction as a required variable has been included (just in case it's not included in the long description). However, we have allowed you to estimate so, in the event you have no idea of the lychgate's age, just make your best guess. The point is that we would like to have some idea of the age of the lychgates submitted whenever such information is available.

Stones of the Dead - Pierres Des Morts - reposoirs - Coffin Stones
We WILL NOT be accepting these as the Stone Church Artefacts category explicitly states that it accepts them.

Language
Given that Waymarking is an activity enjoyed globally, we will happily accept Waymarks in any language, as long as an English translation is included for, at least, the Long Description.

A note about the address:
If you use HTML in your Waymark, don't forget to break the lines in the address text box with the "break" (<br>) tag.

On the left is a classic Depositoire; to the right is a contemporary lychgate, this one from an Anglican (Church of England) church built in 1872, the lychgate built much later.
Instructions for Posting a Lychgates and Depositories Waymark:
At least two photos of the lychgate, taken by the Waymarker, are required, and as well a photo of a church or cemetery sign, if one exists. After all, the Waymarker has probably already Waymarked the church or cemetery and has taken photos of any signage as a matter of course.

At least three descriptive sentences regarding the lychgate, church, cemetery and/or environs, written by the Waymarker, must be included. Any additional supporting documentation must be cited with a link to its originating site and must be placed within quotation marks
OR
be placed within a ...
... Blockquote, such as this one, with the link to the source following the text and WITHIN the blockquote, not outside it. This makes it quite plain that the link refers to the text which precedes it.
From the Link Example 1
Source: Link Example 2

If there is any doubt as to the authenticity of your submission, you MUST copy and paste into the long description a pertinent passage from the owner of the structure describing or naming the structure and place the passage within quotation marks, or within a "blockquote". A link to the passage MUST then be inserted in the Website Variable below the long description.

Naming Your Lychgate Waymark:
Include the name of the church or cemetery in the name, the type of structure (lychgate, depositoire, etc), as well as city or locality and state/province/department as in:
St. Mary's and St. Paul's Anglican Church Lychgate - Lytton, BC
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Include at least one photo of the lychgate or Depositoire taken by yourself. A short description of, or comment on, your visit is required, as well.
