Description:
This category is for waymarking Southern African Trig Beacons. Specifically formal trig beacons of the style used for former British colonies, and applies to South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
Expanded Description:
Only formal trig beacons please - no town survey markers (TSMs) or temporary/local survey marks.

For South Africa, the full list of 27,058 Trig Beacons can be found HERE in the form of kmz files for Google Earth. These files are for 1 degree by 1 degree squares and are named (eg) 2528.kmz which includes all trig beacons in the square S25° E028° In these files you'll find the registered beacon name and number, altitude above ASL, type and height description, etc, and they are a very useful resource for finding the beacons.

GPX files of all trig beacons are available on request for South Africa, by province, district or municipality.

We have been unable (so far) to find any formal records of trig beacons for other Southern African countries, so good luck there... But you're welcome to create waymarks for any such non-South African beacons based on what you can ascertain on-site.

Instructions for Posting a Southern African Trig Beacons Waymark:
1. PERSONAL VISIT: A personal visit to the beacon, its closest access point, or clearest viable viewing point is required to create and post a waymark in this category.

2. COORDINATES: Please use the coordinates exactly as listed in the kmz database as the primary coordinates for the waymark.

3.PHOTOGRAPHS: At least one photo of the beacon site must be submitted. If possible, include a clear close-up view and a more distant view. In cases where access is restricted or limited, submit the best photos you can from a vantage point and indicate in your description the location from which the photos were taken.

4. WAYMARK NAME: Please use the registered name of the beacon (the exact spelling of the formal beacon name as found in the kmz files in CAPITALS) plus the full beacon number following this standard format:

BEACON NAME 2528-173

There are many duplicate beacon names, but beacon numbers are unique, so this naming system should ensure unique waymark names.

5. DETAILED NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION: You will be guided through listing your beacon waymark with some specific questions. For South African beacons, they need to be filled in, but we can allow some freedom with non-South African beacons where info is not available. All the info you need [name, number, altitude, etc] can be found in the kmz files.

IMPORTANT: Please enter key access info like turnoff co-ords, viewpoint co-ords, and permission arrangements in the Quick Description Field because the Detailed Description Field does not download to GPS units, only the Quick Description.

Please give as much guidance as you can about getting to and logging the beacon such as entry co-ords, road condition, etc. Consider those trying to log your waymark, and help them to have the biggest chance of success. Tough terrain and access arrangements pose enough challenge for this category, so please don't make it additionally challenging by not providing important info.

Be respectful of private property. A waymark listing does not give anyone license to trespass!! Provide contact details and access arrangement information, especially where specific permission is needed to reach the beacon. For those hunting the beacon - read the listing, and use your judgement - obtain permission where necessary, and be satisfied to see the beacon from a distance if you cannot "legally" approach it.

For non-South African waymarks, please just give as much info as you can to help others find it and log it.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
We don't require you to provide any specific proof of your visit, but we do request that you upload photos if possible, the more the merrier.

Ideally, you should try to take photos at the actual beacon location, but if that isn't possible (private property, terrain, etc), then photos taken from a distance are also welcome, especially if the beacon is visible in the photo.

  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
