Description:
This category is to discover timelines that are open to the public (free or admission). Please click on "show additional information" below to see requirements for posting in this category.
Expanded Description:

Timelines help us to understand the chronology of historic events, situate newly encountered events and provide a visual aid for identifying cause and effect relationships between events. They are especially enlightening for the understanding of long periods of time (usually pre-historic or geologic) or many events that occurred in a short period of time (often social or cultural events) or simultaneous events that overlap. The timeline must denote at least three events. Often, timelines denote many more than three events, thus several detail photos are required.

Here is an example of a detail photograph of a timeline:

NOTE: The entire timeline must be photographed in detail. Above is just a portion of the timeline; more photos are required. Good photographs that are legible are a requirement for this category.

Often, timelines are part of a larger historic marker(s). The timeline portion of the marker(s) is acceptable as long as it is clearly and fully photographed. Timelines in museums, visitor centers, Universities, etc., will be accepted if they are open to the public. Both free or admission fee required locations are acceptable. For indoor locations, coordinates should be taken at the nearest entrance. If the timeline is split or divided on several different plaques or other media, but still the same timeline in the same general location, that will count only as one Waymark.

The timeline must be permanent and available to the public. A timeline in an airport (or any other secured location) that is within the secure area would not fit this category as only people with tickets would be able to view the timeline.

Instructions for Posting a Timelines Waymark:

1. The timeline must be a location (outdoors or indoors) open to the public. Locations that charge admission fees are allowed. If the same timeline is presented on multiple signs/media in the same general location, please submit as one Timeline Waymark. Tree Rings displays that have timelines that list more than three events are acceptable. Again, the timeline on the tree rings must be legible or transcribed in the long description.

Please include hours and fee information in your detailed description. If there is an admission fee, please include a URL/link to the website about the fees. GPSr coordinates that you have personally obtained.

2. Naming requirement: Name of the Subject - Time Period - City, State/Province/Country (whichever is appropriate). Example: Ancient Denvers - 300 million to 16,000 years ago - Denver, Colorado, USA (WMNZ9H) Quotation marks are not needed around the title.

3. Good photographs that are legible that you have personally taken are a requirement for this category. The entire timeline must be photographed in detail (thus there will often be several photos) as well as the entire sign/installation to show the location of the timeline (for instance, the historic marker where the timeline is located or the hallway where the timeline is mounted). Minimum of two legible, detail photos and one overall photo. If photography is difficult or impossible due to size of the timeline or lighting (usually an indoor issue such as a museum), please do your best and provide a detailed explanation of the timeline in the long description. The goal of the photos is to be informative so the viewer can read the timeline in case they are never able to actually visit the location. Waymarks will not be declined if the Waymarker made a genuine effort to get good photos and conditions were just impossible.

If the timeline is in an electronic format (ex., touchscreen, video-loop), photos may be challenging, but not impossible. Legibility may become an issue, so do include a thorough explanation in the long description.

4. The "Long Description" needs to include a brief explanation of the topic of the timeline and the time period explored. If legible photographs were not able to be acquired (due to impossible photographic conditions), include detailed information from the timeline in lieu of the photos. Links to additional information about the events of the timeline are always appreciated! Hours available and admission fees (if any) and any other information that would help a visitor are required. If the timeline is indoors, please provide the general location within the building (ex., second floor near the paleontology area).

5. If the Waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand the topic(s) and importance of the timeline. The text of the Long Description must be in black. Cite your sources.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

At least one good photo you have personally obtained and a brief story of your visit. Any additions or corrections to the information about the Waymark (for instance, have the hours open to the public changed) will be greatly appreciated.

Category Settings:
  • Waymarks can be added to this category
  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
  • Category is visible in the directory
Variables:
  • Admission fee? (Include URL/link in Long Description to website that gives the current fee)
