Pictorial Village Signs
Managed By: Icon Here Village Signs
This category is dedicated to village or small township signs that depict the heritage, history or culture of the area in pictorial form.
Expanded Description:

This category is dedicated to village signs that depict the heritage, history or culture of the village in pictorial form. The signs are unique to the individual village or township (population size approx. 5000 for a guideline). Materials used might include wrought or cast iron, wood carving, painted wood, plastic moulding etc. Signs may be typically found on village greens or near the local church. We will accept one sign per village or township as sometimes there maybe several of the same sign at different ends of the community. In the case of there being several signs, a good quality waymark would include these on the same waymark, noting different co-ordinates in the description.

Examples of what the category is looking for can be found at the Village Sign Society web site.

What the category will not accept are plain village signs, signs saying “Welcome to…”, laminated information boards, or signs displaying twinning arrangements. The dominant element of the sign must be pictorial, ie the sign should be a picture with incidental lettering, NOT a sign that is predominantly lettering with a token picture on it. If a sign has already been waymarked in the Welcome Signs category, then it may not become a waymark in this category. Officers reserve the right to have the final decision in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for Posting a Pictorial Village Signs Waymark:

In the full description please try to link the elements of the sign to the history, employment or development of the village. For example, a sheaf of corn might depict significant milling activity in the village – in which case it might be nice to include some history of mills in the area. There are quite often good local history web sites that can be used

If there is a plaque on the sign post, please give the inscription in the long description.

The default picture for the waymark should be a high quality (not a camera phone) close up photograph of the village sign, if possible cropped to just show the sign detail. A second photograph showing a general view including the sign is also required.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
To log a visit, a photograph of yourself or your GPSr by the village sign is required. Some description of your visit would be welcome.
