Names From the Bible
Find a geographic place or feature that is named after a person, place or thing mentioned in the Bible.
Expanded Description:
From Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Moses Lake, Washington, the world is full of places that take their names from the Bible. This category collects them!

Locate a place or landmark with a biblical name found in the Old Testament or the New Testament. Eligible waymark examples include cities, towns, villages, mountains, hills, lakes and rivers. Ineligible things include buildings (we don't want to waymark every single church named after a Saint), cemeteries (see above, plus there's separate categories for them), statues of biblical figures (there are other categories for statues) and signs/ street signs. (unless relating to the eligible landmark, like a "Welcome to Nazareth" sign). It is OK if the word "New" is added to the Bible name, as in "New Canaan, CT" or "New Galilee."

Optional: do some research on your place or landmark to find out how it received its name. Was the river named by a missionary who was an early explorer in the area, or is its biblical name just a coincidence?

Next, do as much or as little Bible research as you would like to do. We ask that, at a minimum, you include a citation to at least one passage in the Bible where the namesake of your discovered landmark is mentioned. If you want to do more, you are welcome to write up a complete description of the person, place or thing's role in the Bible.

Here's an example for citing a Bible passage. For the town of Jericho, New York, find the main entry, where "Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, and the walls came tumbling down." Cite that passage as: Joshua 6:1-20.

Please do not go crazy with lots of waymarks for very common names (John, Daniel, Mary, etc.) Save these common names for geographic features clearly tied to the biblical figure. We reserve the right to cut you off when we feel you've had too many. Friends don't let friends waymark uncontrollably.

Finally, please note: This is NOT a category that's just for people who are religious. You can treat the Bible just like any other book, and treat this category like it was "Names from Shakespeare's Plays." Nobody's forcing you to read the Bible or adopt any beliefs. Thanks to the internet, the Bible is fully searchable online. You only need to read the excerpts returned in the search results. There, that wasn't so bad, was it?
Instructions for Posting a Names From the Bible Waymark:
For your waymark's name, please use the name of the location you found -- not just its biblical namesake. Example: "Phillipi, West Virginia."

For your waymark's coordinates, please choose anything logical. For a river, you could choose a sign next to a bridge going over the river. For a town, you could choose coordinates at the town hall, or at a welcome sign on a main highway entering the town.

Please include a citation to one or more Bible verses that mention the person, place or thing that shares a name with your waymark. We recommend the online Bible search engine at Bible Gateway.

Please categorize your waymark as being named after a biblical person (Mary, Moses), a biblical place (Bethlehem, Nazareth), or a biblical thing (Mt. Sinai, the River Jordan).

Please post one or more photographs that illustrate your waymark and show its connection to the Biblical location.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Photos of the visitor with the waymarked feature in the background are strongly encouraged. If you're camera shy, nice photos of just the waymark target are fine.
