Historic Transformer Sub-Stations Buildings
Description:
Transformer sub-station buildings were erected in the early 20th century to house transformer equipment of the power grid. Help documenting these interesting, but slowly disappearing structures.

Please take a look at the Expanded Description for further details.
Expanded Description:

A transformer station in Dornach, Switzerland, designed in 1926 by Rudolf Steiner

Transformers were invented in the late 19th century, they made it possible to transmit electric energy at higher voltages over longer distances with less energy loss than before and are essential for the power grids we have today.

A transformerhouse from 1915 in Thompson Falls, MT

Sometimes, special buildings were created for the transformer stations to protect the equipment and the surrounding area, as well as for reasons of appearance. Those building were usually in or near inhabited areas to transform the high voltage back to what is used in the houses, their larger counterparts near power stations were much less put inside special buildings, but also these do exist.

We are looking for the historic transformer sub-station buildings here, the architecture, not the technology. Those stations were built from the late 19th century until into the mid-20th century. Some of them have been destroyed since, but there can still be found many of them around. They can be active, abandoned or converted to other uses like museums, stores, even apartments or distilleries.

They may have the shape of a tower or a house or a have a completely independent distinct architecture. Some are unobtrusive and do not attract attention, but others are representative and clearly show the pride of the community to be a part of the technological progress.

What we are NOT looking for:
Transformer technology without a real building or modern utility box type sub-stations, like these:

Instructions for Posting a Historic Transformer Sub-Stations Buildings Waymark:
Identify the location of a historic transformer sub-station building and record its location as close as it is accessible for the public.

Please provide as much information as you can get in the long description. Some of the questions you could answer are: When was it built? Who built it? How long was it active? What is it today? Does it have any uncommon features? Some locations will not provide as much information as others, but at least try to create an interesting and informative waymark.

If there are any markers on site, please include a picture; it would also be great to have its text in the long description.

When you use original text from a source for your description (e.g. Wikipedia), please cite your source(s) and mark the citation in an evident way -- give credit where credit is due.

Naming Conventions: The name of the waymark MUST follow this format: Name of Site - City, State/Country. If it is not within a city or town, then please use another regional designation - whatever best identifies the location of the site.

Please post at least two original photos. Additional photos are greatly appreciated and will enhance the quality of your waymark.
