Cave Entrances (Natural)
 allows ratings
Description:
Find a hollow or natural passage under or into the earth and mark the entrance or opening. Please be aware that cave exploring is an inherently dangerous activity that, like rock climbing, is made safer by the use of proper equipment and knowledge. To learn more about responsible, safe, and environmentally friendly caving, this group encourages you to seek out a local cavers' club for a good introduction to the sport.
Expanded Description:
A cave is a natural underground void large enough for an adult human to enter. Some scientists stipulate that it must be large enough that some portion of it will not receive daylight; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like cliff cavities, rock shelters and sea caves. Speleology is the scientific exploration and study of all aspects of caves. The act of exploring a cave for recreation is called 'caving', 'potholing', or (in the USA) 'spelunking'. From Wikipedia.org.

Wild (unmanaged) caves with exceptional and/or delicate and unprotected decoration or threatened wildlife (e.g. bat nurseries) are excluded. Be aware that anyone within the waymarking community making a request to the managers to archive a wild cave on the grounds that exceptional decoration or threatened wildlife exists there will be honored.

Instructions for Posting a Cave Entrances (Natural) Waymark:
In the long description, please describe the cave in at least one sentence (a good, detailed account of your personal experience is highly encouraged). Waymarks should also include in the description any exceptional hazards that may be encountered if the cave is entered.

Failure to include a minimum of one sentence describing the cave will result in your waymark being denied.

Since cave systems can sometimes have many exit points, please record the coordinates of only one of these openings.

Removal or collecting of any kind of sample (interesting rocks, pebbles, fossils, sand, stalagtites, stalagmites, other cave decoration, etc.) is never to be encouraged or implicitly tolerated in the submission of any waymark in this category. Waymark descriptions should always adhere to the "Leave no trace" philosophy.

Wild (unmanaged) caves with exceptional and/or delicate and unprotected decoration or threatened wildlife (e.g. bat nurseries) are excluded. Be aware that any request by a credible source inside or outside the waymarking community to the managers to archive a wild cave on the grounds that exceptional decoration or threatened wildlife exists there will be honored.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Please include a digital photograph of the cave which documents your visit and any information that may be helpful for future visitors.

Gaping Gill is where Fell Beck drops 105 meter underground into a massive chamber. Normally unseen this spectacular void is only available to dedicated potholers. For 2 weeks a year a winched chair lowers waymarkers to the chamber floor for a fee.
