Orientation Tables

Description:
An orientation table is a small tourism oriented construction, located at an observation point, which enables visitors to identify the characteristic elements of the view from that location. There are several kinds, from the simplest to the true artistic creation. Orientation tables can be found in a variety of locations, but because their main goal is to identify the features of a landscape, they are generally located at points which are higher than the surrounding countryside.
Expanded Description:

Orientation tables are composed of two elements.

Geographic Information:
often presented in the form of a landscape which is painted, drawn, carved, or photographed on various types of media (enamel plate, stone, metal, concrete, ...), it always includes at least directions and place names; usually those which can be viewed from the orientation table, but some display directions and distances to more remote locations (cities, countries, ...).

Structure:
on which the geographic information is presented. It may be a free-standing table which is possible to walk around, or simply a sign placed (horizontaly, inclined or verticaly) against a building (wall).
Instructions for Posting a Orientation Tables Waymark:

An orientation table helps tourists understand a landscape. In this category, the table is as important as the landscape itself.

Two photographs are highly recommended to illustrate an orientation table waymark:
- A close-up photo of the table.
- A view of the table with the landscape in the background.

Optional : A third photo (ore more) showing the landscape in more detail.

Please, don't show your GPSr in the picture.

Restrictions:
- The viewer must see the depiction of the view and the real view itself simultaneously.
Sometimes, orientation tables are located inside buildings. So, only waymark this table if the landscape is directly visible. In this case a photo with the landscape in the background (good quality picture) is required.
- Please, don't submit commercial purpose maps. Only maps with a touristic use.
- Orientation maps must be open to the public.
- In this category, we are not looking for compass roses. They have their own category. They can be easily distinguished by their large size and because they are generally placed at ground level.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
1) Tell what you experienced during your visit.

2) Proof of your visit is required. Send at least a picture of the table. Either :
- Table and landscape
- A close-up view of the table : why not with your finger showing a particular direction (your city, country, your holiday residence ...) (optional)

A photo with your GPSr is not required.

Maiden Peak is seen in the 'orientation table' and the background of this photograph. In 2010, this sign was removed and was replaced by three colorful but less informative signs with no orientation table.
