Lighthouse Passport Stamps
 allows ratings
This category seeks the lighthouse passport stamping locations throughout the world. Often these locations are not at the lighthouse itself but may be in a nearby location.
Expanded Description:

This category seeks the lighthouse passport stamping locations throughout the world. Often these locations are not at the lighthouse itself but may be in a nearby visitors center, museum or gift shop.

This category is not looking for a lighthouses, but rather the locations where you can get a rubber passport stamp put onto your paper, commemorating your visit to a lighthouse. Many lighthouses will not have these passport stamps. A Finish website has a Passport that can be printed on you own printer in the website Majakat matkailutuotteeksi both in English and Finish.

In the United States, there is at least one major program from the U.S. Lighthouse Society that has an organized Passport program. Today that program only has 300 participating lighthouses out of thousands.

This category is open worldwide, not set on any specific program. As passport stamp collecting grows, so will its popularity among people. The interest in this category is to let waymarkers know where, when and how they might collect their passport stamp. While the design of the category may be loosely fit around the U.S. Lighthouse Society program, please enter your Passport Stamps from around the world.

For clarification or definition within this category; a passport stamp is a piece of rubber with a design that when ink is added to the equation, will leave an impression in a book, paper or other keepsake that you can take with you. This is not a category for philatelist, whom may want to compare their prize with the actual item, rather post that waymark in the Philatelic Photographs category.

Instructions for Posting a Lighthouse Passport Stamps Waymark:

This category is about the hobby collecting passport stamps from an associated lighthouses. There are categories for Coastal Lighthouses , Landlocked Lighthouses and Lighthouse Bed and Breakfasts , please post lighthouses in these categories when you find a lighthouse. When you waymark a postage stamp at an actual light house, post those in the Philatelic Photographs category.

In the Short Description, please describe the lighthouse in one sentence. The second sentence should focus on where the passport stamp is located.

Example: The St. Augustine Lighthouse is 165 feet tall. You can find the stamp at the visitors center located on the grounds of the lighthouse.

In the Long Description, tell us where the stamp is, and any information needed to obtain the stamp. State hours and days the location is open as well as any seasonal changes in visitors hours to obtain the stamp.

Required: A minimum of three photographs

  1. Either scan or photograph the stamp. This will be the default picture in your waymark.
  2. Picture of where the stamp is located.
  3. Picture of associated signage.

Optional (But strongly encouraged)

  • Picture of the lighthouse, if possible, for comparison to the stamp.

All photographs should be reasonable sized to appreciate the subject matter. Size determination will be determined on a case to case basis, however, no poor cell phone pictures please.

Exceptions will be allowed, but please explain the circumstances. For instance, if a visitors center or museum has a stamp for a lighthouse that no longer exists, or is not on the same grounds, an explanation in the waymark will suffice. Please make people aware of what to expect when they visit the location they will get the stamp.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

Please include the following with your submission of a visit:

  1. Photograph of the passport stamp. Over time, passport stamps change, some are dated, and let’s face it, this is the purpose of the waymark.
  2. Area photograph of location. Try to make it from a new angle to show something new. Pictures can include interaction, as that is encouraged, but should be done so with the thought of inspiring further visitation of the area. No GPSr Pictures, unless there is something significant to show about the coordinates.
  3. Short narrative. Tell of your visit, share something new, add new visiting hours or anything that would be nice to know when visiting the location.

Finally, please add a visit if you go to the area and find the passport stamp is missing. Please add details, such as, they expect a new passport stamp and when, or the like. If the passport stamp has moved, please log a visit, and waymark the new location. (Old locations will not be archived. You never know when they might move the passport stamp back to the original waymark. This is where the visits come in handy.)

Please do not add a visit if you go to the location and the passport stamp is inaccessible because the passport stamp has moved to another location or where it is housed is closed. This category is about the passport stamp. You may be able to post a log about a lighthouse and not go inside, but you can not log a passport stamp without gaining the passport stamp.
