This category is for listing Broken Column headstones/monuments found in cemeteries only; however, we will consider Broken Column headstones/monuments found outside a cemetery on a case-by-case basis. Broken Columns are usually in the classical Greek style or with a tapering shaft. They are said to denote the burial spot of a person whose life was cut short. They are also sometimes used to depict the loss of the head of a family.
Although headstones in the shape of tree stumps or trees with broken branches symbolize a life cut short similar to broken column headstones, they are not the focus of this category. We are only accepting headstones that are true broken columns, which are usually in the classical Greek style or with a tapering shaft.
NOTE: This category is not intended for the posting of vandalized headstones. Rather it is for columns that were intentionally constructed to appear broken to denote a life cut short.
At a minimum, Broken Column headstones can be found in Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. We suspect they occur in many other countries around the world as well. We'll update this list as Broken Column headstones/monuments are posted in other countries.
Below are photos of a couple of examples of what would be accepted.
