Victorian Style Architecture
 allows ratings
Description:
This category is for waymarking all the varied styles and types of Victorian Buildings. Commercial and other public buildings are accepted in this category.
Expanded Description:

The Victorian era began when Alexandria Victoria, at the age of 18, ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom in June of 1837. She became Queen Victoria and her almost 64 year reign was one that saw great strides in science, arts, and technology. The architecture of this era reflects the age - the reflection of the past with Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance Revival styles, to the grandness of Empire with the Italianate and Second Empire styles, to the opulent and almost gaudy Queen Anne, Shingle, Stick styles. Each of these styles reflects the mid to late nineteenth century. This category strives to document these buildings that have survived over 100 plus years.

The category is looking for Victorian style architecture. Because a building was constructed between 1837 and 1901 doesn't mean it will be accepted in this category - it must have a documented Victorian Style. Public buildings, commercial buildings, private buildings (please see the notes on how to post to be sensitive on privacy issues for private owners), even mausoleums can be waymarked in this category as long as a Victorian style can be proven with documentation.

Category Update History

**6FEB2010**:
If your building isn't easily identifiable as one of the styles of Victorian architecture listed on this page or the links on this page then you must submit the reference (a picture of a sign or link to a website, for ex.) from which you got your information on its VICTORIAN architectural style.

**4SEP2018**:
All construction dates for buildings with listed Victorian Styles will be accepted. These buildings do not need to be constructed during the Victorian era.
That said, the building MUST have the style listed. A listing of "Late Victorian or Victorian Eclectic WILL NOT BE unless the listing is further clarified with one of the styles above. Again, the qualifying style MUST BE listed in the long description. Having it in a link to further documentation is not acceptable and will result in denial of the waymark until corrected.

**4SEP2018**:
Officers may require third party documentation that the building being submitted for review actually be of the Victorian Style stated in the proposed waymark if such documentation was not submitted upon the original submission. This may be especially true of commercial buildings were styles can be muddlied.

**09NOV2018**:
Buildings will be judged by their major style. If that major style is unacceptable, BUT displays minor characteristics of an acceptable style - this building will be denied. The building MUST display a majority of an acceptable Victorian style architecture.

There are some Architectural Styles that will get their start at the very tail end of the Victorian era that are NOT Victorian, but are rather a style that goes off in another tangent. Submissions with these styles will be denied.

Unacceptable Architectural Style Listing

Classical Revival - this "eclectic" style started as an homage to the buildings of the Chicago Columbian Exposition World's Fair of 1893 and remained a very popular style until 1950. It is not considered by experts to be a Victorian Era Style.
Beaux Arts - again, another of these "eclectic" Styles that started due the Columbian Exposition World's Fair of 1893 and its buildings. This style would remain popular until the 1930's where it would morph into Art Deco. Again, not a Victorian Style.
Prairie School - again, another style begun at the very tail end of the Victorian era during the Columbian Exposition World's Fair of 1893 as another rebellion against the Classical Revival style that most public buildings were employing. It really took off around 1900 and ended in 1915. It's leading proponent was Frank Lloyd Wright. It is not considered by experts to be a Victorian Era Style.
Art Nouveau - this style again begun at the very end of the Victorian era and was a rebellion against the more formal rules of architecture. This style is already covered by the Art Deco/Art Nouveau waymarking category - - Link
Sullivanesque - this style was a companion style with the Art Nouveau for taller skycrapers and as such will not be approved.
Greek Revival - this style is a pre-Victorian era style that began in Philadelphia in 1820 and was thought to embody the concept of Democracy. This style would feed directly to the Classical Revival style later in the century.

The Classical Revival and the Beaux Arts have significant documentation against their inclusion - this is the reason for their being singled out.
Other Styles may be added to this list as necessary.

Other local styles such as dog-trot, German-Missouri, Craftsman, Commercial, etc. are also not considered part of the Victorian Style category, and also will be denied, even though the building was constructed within the Victorian timeframe.
