Description:
The birthplaces of US Presidents, Red Sox players and founders of world-famous organizations (Cadillac, Lincoln, Rotary International, Alcoholics Anonymous); homes of famous authors (Rudyard Kipling, Pearl S. Buck); technological achievements (first ski tow in the US, invention of the steam engine); military engagements. Vermont's historic markers provide us with fascinating glimpses into the past and insights into the present.
Expanded Description:
Vermont Historic Markers

"Official" Vermont historic markers are placed by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, typically at the request (and expense) of a community, private individual or organization wishing to commemorate a significant person, place or event in Vermont's history. The marker is dark green with gold lettering, framed in silver and topped by the state seal in gold. Markers are always publicly accessible (often roadside, but sometimes in parks or at building entrances).

A guide to Vermont's historic markers can be found here, providing the location and full text of each marker, arranged by town.

Other "unofficial" plaques and markers will be considered.

Instructions for Posting a Vermont Historical Markers Waymark:

Naming convention: Unlike other states, Vermont markers are not numbered. Thus: Marker Title - Town or City (e.g., Battery Park - Burlington) is the acceptable format.

Besides personally obtained GPS coordinates, which should be taken as close to the actual marker as possible, each entry must include:

1. A close-up photo of the marker sign area showing the text clearly. We recognize that some markers may be in need of refurbishing and thus not be easily readable in a photograph which is why we ask for...

2. The full text of the marker.

3. A photo of the place commemorated or the general area around the marker. All photos must be original and placed in the gallery.

If you have done additional research, please include that as well, including pertinent web links. Photos must be your original work. You can save yourself some trouble by copying and pasting the full text of the marker from the official website (above).

NOTE: No other extraneous elements, such as counters, HTML code (other than to insert photos or format the posting), or other embellishments will be accepted and will result in a waymark being declined.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
-- At least one original photo of the marker showing some of the background and surrounding area. You or team members may be included, and you may submit multiple photos.
-- Please use the date of your visit as "Date Recorded."
-- Optional: Any interesting details of your visit you may wish to share: Do you have a special interest in the subject of the marker? Did you seek this marker out or just happen upon it?
-- Optional: Additional research, links, etc.
