Peace Memorials
Managed By: Icon Here Peace Seekers
Description:
The purpose of this category is to seek out monuments/memorials that promote the ideals of national, international, or world peace.
Expanded Description:
There are many examples of monuments/memorials that promote the ideals of national, international, or world peace. Examples include:

The Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan, which was inspired by a young girl who died from the aftereffects of radiation exposure. The bronze statue on top is of a young girl holding over her head a paper crane, which symbolizes the hope of all children for a peaceful future.

The Eternal Light Peace Memorial in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA, which stands on the site of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. An inscription at the memorial reads "Peace Eternal in a Nation United".

Over 800 Sri Chinmoy Peace Markers that are dedicated to the goal of peace and can be found in 50 nations around the world. Below is an example of one located in Wellington, New Zealand.

Other examples include U.N. Year of Peace Commemorative Plaques such as the one found in Christchurch, New Zealand (visit link), the Peace Convention Marker in Washington, D.C., USA (visit link), the Peace Cairn in County Donegal in northwest Ireland (visit link), and the Peace Chant sculpture in Peace Park in Portland, Oregon (visit link). These are but a few examples.

Peace Poles will not be accepted in this category. They should be posted here (visit link) instead.

Monuments to individuals who were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize will also not be accepted here unless the memorial clearly promotes the ideals of national, international, or world peace. They should be posted here (visit link) instead

NOTE: We are not looking for monuments that just mention the word "peace" in relation to some other topic and actually have nothing to do with the ideals of national, international, or world peace. Neither are we looking for monuments that are dedicated to "peace officers". Monuments/memorials must relate the ideals of national, international, or world peace.

Instructions for Posting a Peace Memorials Waymark:

See above photos for examples of what we're looking for. To be accepted, there must be a sign or plaque that includes text that promotes the ideals of national, international, or world peace. If such sign or plaque does not exist, a website must be provided that identifies the purpose of the monument/memorial as promoting peace.

1. NAME: The name of the item and its location should be included in the title. Generally this should be the city/town, state and/or country -- whatever is appropriate to its location.

Example 1: Children's Peace Memorial - Hiroshima, Japan
Example 2: Sri Chinmoy Peace Marker - Wellington, New Zealand
Example 3: Peace Convention Marker - Washington, D.C., USA

2. COORDINATES: Post coordinates to the item, or the nearest location where you can take coordinates if the item is indoors. Coordinates must be marked with a handheld GPS receiver

3. PHOTOS: At least two original photographs (taken by you) -- a view showing the entire item (this should be the default photo) and a close-up clearly showing the monument/memorial text that includes a message of peace. If there is no such text, you must include a link to an internet site identifying the item as something that promotes peace. A GPSr photo is not required.

4. DESCRIPTION: Include as much information about the item as you can. As stated above, if the monument/memorial does not include any text that includes a message of peace, you must include a link to an internet site that identifies the item as something that promotes the ideals of national, international, or world peace.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. However, if the waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand what the waymark is about. And, as always, please cite your sources. Thank you!
