Old Spanish Trail Auto Route
Description:
This category seeks to waymark the unique pieces of Americana and history that still lie along the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route. It connects the old Spanish colonial towns of St. Augustine, Florida, on the U.S. Atlantic coast and San Diego, California, on the U.S. Pacific Coast. The Old Spanish Trail Auto Route is not to be confused with the 19th century cattle trail of the same name that wound from Santa Fe to Los Angeles.
Expanded Description:
The Old Spanish Trail Auto Route (OST) once spanned 3,000 miles of roadway from the Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean crossing 67 counties and 8 states along the southern border of the United States. Work on the auto highway began in 1915 and, by the 1920s, the trail linked St. Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California, with its center and headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The cities in between boasted a shared heritage of Spanish missions, forts, and Spanish colonization. The lure of the OST continued to captivate travelers until the early 1960s, when new interstates redirected traffic off the old road.

The OST highway passes through some of America's best tourist destinations including St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Mobile, New Orleans, San Antonio, Tombstone, Tucson, and San Diego. The OST largely follows what later became U.S. Highway 90 in the east and U.S. 80 in the west. Indeed, the road continued on as the Old Spanish Trail even after the U.S. numbered highways were created, with later OST maps including the U.S. highway shields. "Welcome to a trip in space and time on a highway that is now four highways: the OST, Old U.S.-90, U.S.-90, and IH-10. The original highway continues to exist in many locations but in others has either been paved over to make way for the subsequent roads or has dead-ended into rubbish heaps and grassy mounds. But for many, many hundreds of miles, the original highway (sometimes expanded) remains the Main Street of the coastal South from Saint Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California. Sometimes it's called Main Street, other times its Cervantes or Broadway or Claiborne, but wherever you drive on it, you bump into people who continue to refer to it as the Old Spanish Trail. Let's start at the beginning, the far eastern section of the trail. It was not the first place construction started but is the easternmost terminus of the highway."

This category is for waymarking points of interest relating to the people, places, events, and things that are a part of the history, culture, and lore of the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route – anything that captures the spirit of the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route during its heyday. Potential waymarks might be pieces of Americana such as diners or motor lodges, historic markers about the road, signs for the OST, historic structures along the road, roadside attractions, etc.

Submissions to this category must be found along the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route (see the segment by segment links above), and you MUST include proof that the location for your submission is part of the OST. In addition, submissions must be judged as acceptable by qualifying for at least one of these three criteria:

Does it represent period culture?

Is it distinctive or of significant interest?

Is it an important milestone or marker?

1. NAME: The name of the point of interest and its location should be included in the title. For example: Zero Milestone - St. Augustine, FL

2. PHOTO: At least one photo of the point of interest that you have taken yourself is required. Additional photos would be greatly appreciated! A GPSr photo is not required.

3. LONG DESCRIPTION: A description of the point of interest must be included in the Long Description. It must be different from the information posted in the Quick Description. You must cite your source if you copy any information directly from someone else. ***In addition, you MUST include proof that the location of your submission is part of the OST.***
