Description:
Our goal is to find sites honoring or related to the life and legacy of the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.
Expanded Description:
John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK, was the thirty-fifth President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963.

Whatever views one may have about his personal life, politics, or career, Kennedy's place in history is notable, and he has been honored throughout the world. There are many sites that honor his legacy in some way, if simply by bearing his name.

Waymarks for this category will fall into three broad types:

1). Places of significance to Kennedy's life.

These are things such as places he lived, places where some significant event in his life took place, etc. In order to qualify, such a location must have a clear relation to a notable event or relationship. In general, some place that he visited, gave a speech, etc. will not qualify unless there is a commemorative plaque or other documentation of an important event. We realize that this is a somewhat subjective criterion, but use common sense and we will do our best to be reasonable while maintaining the integrity of this category.

2). Monuments, memorials, statues honoring JFK.
These may be located anywhere except inside a museum. Those in publicly accessible indoor locations such as the lobby of a building are acceptable. Original paintings or displays are also acceptable, but reproductions are not.

3). Named places and buildings.
There are two important exclusions - elementary and secondary schools, and common streets. The former for security reasons, and the latter to avoid the mundane and ubiquitous street signs. Exceptions to the named streets will be considered on a case-by-case basis. To qualify it must be a major highway or thoroughfare with a documented story behind the naming of the street, and more than a photo of a street sign must be submitted.

As the sitting president, JFK's name appears on many government buildings, from post offices to courthouses. Unless the building is actually named for Kennedy or there is some other clear and significant connection, these will not be accepted. If JFK stayed there, gave a speech, dedicated it, or just visited, that is not sufficient.

KENNEDY FAMILY:
While many members of JFK's family are noteworthy in their own right, waymarks must have a primary and clear relation to JFK himself.

Instructions for Posting a John F. Kennedy Waymark:

1). COORDINATES: Personally obtained coordinates must be obtained as close to the actual object, structure or site as possible. For buildings, including indoor sites, the coordinates should be the main entrance. For sites that are large, such as a park, choose a logical point and state in the description where the coordinates are obtained.

2). PHOTOS: In most cases more than one photo will be required to display the site properly! Consider both panoramic and close-up photos. Signs and plaques should always be highlighted with clear close-up shots. While we don't expect professional photography, waymarks submitted with underexposed, blurred, skewed or otherwise poor quality photos may be declined. All photos must be the waymarker's original photos and be placed in the photo gallery.

3). DESCRIPTIONS: Keep in mind that the quick description is what people see when browsing, so do your best to give a succinct description that will give people at a glance an overview of the waymark.

In all cases, a clear description of how the waymark is related to JFK must be given, especially if it is a site related to his life. Do not give general biographical information except as it relates to the particular waymark. This is neither an encyclopedia nor a tourist guide.

If you copy and paste, place give proper attribution.

4). VARIABLES: Please make a good faith effort to provide the information for the variables. Most are not required as they may not apply in all instances.

5). WAYMARK NAME: The city and state or country must be at the end of each waymark name. Two letter state abbreviations are preferred. Example: Interesting JFK Site - Anytown, MA

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.
