Public Access Lands
 allows ratings
Public access lands are areas that people can visit at their leisure where permits, special memberships, etc. are not required in order to explore and/or be educated.

This category seeks to waymark forests and lands that are accessible to the general public and do not qualify as National, State, Provincial and/or Municipal parks.
Expanded Description:
Areas that will qualify for this category include (but are not necessarily limited to): National forest, State forest, State game lands, wildlife management areas, nature preserves/refuges, nature conservancy areas and general public use lands.

If an area is already listed in the National, State, Provincial and/or Municipal parks categories it should be listed in those categories and not here.

Since some public access areas have multiple entry points, etc. waymarks will be accepted for all visibly marked trailheads and/or designated parking locations for the area (meeting reasonable distance requirements, etc).

If the land is undeveloped, signs delineating the public lands will be accepted (meeting reasonable distance requirements). Signs should be of substance, clearly designate the name of the area of public use and should be more elaborate then a “posted sign” stapled to a tree.

Variations of this will happily be reviewed by the group to see if they fit this category. Keep in mind that the more information provided and the more detailed the pictures, the sooner the waymarks will be approved!
Instructions for Posting a Public Access Lands Waymark:
Minimum qualifications for posting a WM in this category:

1 - Coordinates taken by you of the trailhead, parking and/or signage of the public land

2 – Waymarkers are encouraged to submit multiple photos taken by you of the area which can include pictures of the parking/trailhead area and pictures of the area itself (trails, terrain features, unique locations, etc.) in order to give visitors an idea of what is in store for them

3 - Has to be lands open to the general public that do not qualify as National, State, Provincial and/or Municipal Parks

4 - Land should be accessible to anyone (no areas that require a membership to visit)

5 - The area has to be at least 1 hectare/acre/km/etc. in size

6 - Must be listed as public access land either through signage on location or a reliable internet source verifying the land is indeed for public use

Your description of the area should include any background/history about the location, what the area is like (forests, fields, swamps, animal life, water features, trails, etc.), the quality and length of the trails (if applicable) and any activities visitors can enjoy while there.

Any questions on what might qualify - please let us know!
