One-Room Schoolhouses
Managed By: Icon Here One-Room Schoolhouses
The purpose of this category is to waymark existing and/or historic One-Room Schoolhouses.
Expanded Description:

One-room schoolhouses were commonplace throughout rural portions of various countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In most rural (country) and small town schools, all of the students met in a single room. There, a single teacher taught academic basics to five to eight grade levels of elementary-age boys and girls. While in many areas one-room schools are no longer used, it is not uncommon for them to remain in developing nations and rural areas, such as much of the Falklands and Shetland.

Instructions for Posting a One-Room Schoolhouses Waymark:
To waymark a One-Room Schoolhouse, it must still be standing, whether it is still in use, abandoned, converted to something else, rebuilt, or recreated for an outdoor museum. A church building holding ONLY Sunday School classes is not a real school and will not be accepted.

NOTE: Some One-Room Schoolhouses do have more than one room in the building as some schoolhouses were built with an apartment for the teacher, usually upstairs.
The "One-Room" is in reference to a single classroom where all grades were taught at the same time.

You MUST include two or more photos of the schoolhouse you are submitting. You must submit a photo of the one-room schoolhouse itself and if there is a sign, historic plaque, or vintage playground equipment, upload photos of these as well.

The schoolhouse must safely be accessible to the public, whether viewable from the road or a parking lot.

Here are a few resources on the web for information on One-Room Schoolhouses in your area.
