Description:: Outdoor Altars are permanent structures made of wood, metal or stone that are positioned outdoors for the purpose of worshipping outdoors. These are unique creations in religions where worship is traditionally performed indoors as much as possible. This category will document the locations of these outdoor altars.

Expanded Description:

For purposes of this category, Outdoor Altars are permanent structures made of wood, metal, or stone, situated in other than any traditional location for an altar (i.e., in a church or chapel). These can be fully exposed to the weather, partially exposed, or in a cave. These are unique creations in religions where worship is traditionally performed indoors as much as possible. Outdoor Altars can be ornate stone with carefully etched details placed in a landscaped area or they can be rustic unfinished wood unevenly nailed together in the middle of forest. There may or may not be associated seating.

Ideal Outdoor Altar locations should be able to provide a religious service that could accommodate clergy and more than one attendee. However, all outdoor altars, including those for shrines, will be included.

Year-round or active use is not a requirement, but the structure must be permanent. Temporary altars erected for one-time events would not be included into this category.

Not all Outdoor Altars are accessible to the public. Outdoor Altars should not be located on private property or encourage trespassing.

If your outdoor altar goes missing in the real world, do not archive your waymark! Please just adjust the description to reflect that the altar is no longer there. Your waymark may be the only lasting documentation that it existed at all!

Instructions for Posting a Outdoor Altars Waymark:

Coordinates must be recorded using a handheld GPS receiver.

An original image of the altar and area is required. Make sure your photo captures as much of the area as possible. More than one photo may be necessary to accomplish this. More than one photo is always encouraged.

Consider writing about the location in the Long Description to increase the appeal of the location for future visitors.

If there are time restrictions on visits or access fees required due to an Outdoor Altar's historic importance, include this information.
