Managed By: Icon Here Buddhist Temples
Description:
A Buddhist temple is a place of devotion, worship and meditation for all Buddhists. The Buddhist Temples and Public Shrines category is a place to record the locations of Buddhist Temples and Public Shrines around the world.
Expanded Description:
Locations which are Buddhist temples or public shrines can be recorded here. Shrines are generally less elaborate and smaller structures than are temples. They can be as small as a niche in a wall or as large as a small (up to bandstand size) pagoda. (Granted there could be exceptions to this rule with large shrines rivaling temples in size.) Shrines which are not accessible to the public (ex. private household shrines) are excluded. Shrines in hotel lobbies are considered publicly accessible. UPDATE 20-June-2010 : Ruins of shrines or temples having historic interest may also be posted here. Evidence of its use as a temple must be visible in the remains.

Please respect proper etiquette when visiting a Buddhist temple or shrine. Take your cues from the "regulars". It may be necessary to remove shoes and hats. In general, short skirts or revealing garments are not appropriate attire. For those with long skirts it is recommended to bring a shawl to drape over the legs when sitting. Open displays of affection between individuals are discouraged. Conversation should be kept to a minimum in and around the shrine room, as people often do silent sitting and practice there.

Instructions for Posting a Buddhist Temples and Public Shrines Waymark:
Record the coordinates using your own GPS device and post a representative photo of the exterior of the temple or shrine along with a photo of a sign indicating that the location is a Buddhist shrine or a temple. If no sign is available, this requirement may be waved.

Determine if the temple is open to visitors and indicate by responding to the variable. NOTE : shrines which are not accessible to the public are excluded (e.g. private household shrines).

If the temple or shrine is open to visitors indicate if photography is permitted inside and whether a statue of the Buddha is present.

Please include the locality (city, town, village, settlement, etc.) in the waymark name for example "Nan Tien Temple - Wollongong"

Buddhist temples can include several shrines on the premises. In this case please waymark only the temple under this category and not each individual shrine.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Include in your log one or two complete sentences. Logs containing a few words like "visited it" are subject to deletion.

Photos of the shrine are strongly encouraged when permitted otherwise please refrain from taking pictures inside and in any case, generally have respect for the religious nature of the site.
