Methodist Churches
Managed By: Icon Here Methodists
From its ambitious beginnings in 1729, Methodism is now the way of worship for over seventy-five million people worldwide. These Methodist congregations, in all their flavours, gather in buildings specific for Methodist worship. It is for buildings currently and formerly used as Methodist Churches that this category has been created.
Expanded Description:
Methodism began during the evangelical awakening in Great Britain in the 1700's and was a factor in the Free Church of England's 1844 beginning. There are two primary doctrines in Methodism, Calvinism and Armenian. Prominent figures in Methodism history are Howell Harris, George Whitefield and John Wesley.

Methodism is the way of worship for over seventy-five million people worldwide. These Methodist congregations gather in buildings specific for Methodist worship. This category has been created to keep a catalog of these current and former Methodist buildings.

There are many different types of Methodists, the largest groups being:

  • World Methodist Council
  • United Methodist Church
  • Free Methodist Church
  • African Methodist Episcopal Church
  • African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church
  • Methodist Church in Britain
  • Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
  • Uniting Church in Australia
  • Buildings and former buildings for lesser known Methodist Churches, such as Republican Methodist and American Primitive Methodist Church, will be accepted.

  • Instructions for Posting a Methodist Churches Waymark:
Naming convention: Name of Church - Location (e.g., Richford United Methodist Church - Richford, Vermont). Please make sure that the Waymark name and the church signage agree (unless you can present a compelling reason otherwise).

*If the building is no longer an active church, or no longer a Methodist Church, please include Former in the title.

Coordinates: Taken from a publicly accessible location as close as possible to the building (at the front door if possible).

Photographs: At least two original photographs -taken by you- are required:(1) one of the Church building (please try to get it all in for the default shot) and (2) one of the sign so the words on the sign are legible.
Please use your own photographs, and not copyright photographs taken by others.
    Additional photographs are welcome!

No GPSr in front of the camera. We trust you used one to take the coordinates, but we're more interested in nice photos than in you proving you have one.

The Church must have its own building for worship and is not sharing the site with another purpose, such as a school auditorium or cultural center that otherwise has no affiliation with the Methodist congregation. Churches located in a strip-mall, also known as a "storefront church" will be accepted. These churches share the general campus with other purposes but not the worship space.

Long Description. Please provide as much information as possible. A multiple-sentence paragraph unique from the Short Description is required in the Long Description area of the waymark.
If you can't find any history about the church itself, describe the church and the area it's in. Is it the original building, or a newer replacement? Built on/over the original, or on a new site?

Buildings that are no longer active Methodist Churches must have photographic or documented support for the existence of the Methodist Church during its activity. This "proof" can exist in the form of a marker, plaque, tablet, or website. If a sign no longer exists for a former Methodist Church, the documented proof of its former activity will override the requirement for an image of the church sign.

*If the building is no longer an active church, or no longer a Methodist Church, please include Former in the title.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
