Description:: Discover items, places, people, events, etc. that represent the extremes of their class, identified by any superlative (with a few exceptions).

Expanded Description:

We always seem to be fascinated by extremes, the superlatives of the world. In English these are usually described by adjectives with the suffix "est." Examples are highest, largest, smallest, longest, shortest, oldest, coldest, rarest, etc. In English, the words most or least may also indicate superlatives, such as the "most expensive." We will also accept "only" as a superlative. Regardless of the actual description, the waymark must be of something superlative. Additionally, the waymark must be of something that actually exists -- NOT just a plaque or marker indicating a past event, building, or person!

Also excluded are superlative claims of a purely COMMERCIAL nature, such as, "Finest Pizza in the world," or "Fastest service in town." If there is an OBJECTIVE measurement or authentication of a superlative status related to a business, it may be considered, such as: "World's largest hamburger," as long as there is outside verification, not just the SUBJECTIVE claim of the business. Other promotional slogans such as, "Friendliest town in the world," also fall outside of the scope of this category. This is to be a fun category, but there have to be some limits. We are after ACTUAL, REAL superlatives!

DUPLICATES: Each site or object may have only ONE waymark in this category, even though it may qualify as more than one superlative. You my use multiple superlatives in the waymark title, such as OLDEST & LARGEST: . . . ." or you may choose ONE superlative for the waymark name and then document the additional superlatives in the description. But, in no case will more than one waymark be accepted for exactly the same site/object.

PLEASE NOTE: You must indicate sufficient documentation that the waymark is truly a superlative, NOT just a subjective evaluation (such as "most beautiful"). Sometimes this may be by a plaque, monument or other sign. Web sites, reference works, personal verification that is reliable, are all acceptable documentation. The burden of proof is with the one submitting the waymark, but will be subject to the judgement of the officers for the category. We are NOT concerned, however, with PROOF of superlative status, only that the claim is made. For instance, there are competing claims for the shortest river in the world. Each claimed river could be waymarked as long as it is documented. We are not Guinness.

PLEASE NOTE: As indicated above, the waymark must be of something that actually exists -- NOT just a plaque or marker indicating a past event, building, or person! The waymark may be of something natural or man-made.

PLEASE NOTE: Waymarks that qualify for inclusion in the "FIRST of Its Kind" category will NOT be accepted here. There may be some waymarks that would otherwise qualify for that category except for lack of a identifying plaque, and those may be submitted here as long as there is other recognized documentation.

Instructions for Posting a Superlatives Waymark:

NAME: The waymark name must begin with a superlative word in UPPERCASE followed by a hyphen, the subject of the waymark, and the scope of the superlative (e.g. world, state, country, etc.)

EXAMPLES:

LARGEST -- Indoor Ice Skating Rink in the world
HIGHEST -- Suspension Bridge in South Dakota
OLDEST -- Restaurant in Lisbon

1. Coordinates obtained from your personal GPS readings.

2. At least one photograph showing the object or site must be submitted to the category's gallery. If there are plaques, monuments, or other identifying lettering, close-up photos of these are strongly encouraged.

3. Narrative description -- Include as much information about your superlative and indicate your supporting documentation. Enter this in the variable for "Type of documentaion." This could be a web site, brochure, sign or anything else that makes the claim.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.
